Esperanza Wins Volleyball Title

Ashley Engle had 29 kills and four blocks to lead Anaheim Esperanza to a 31-29, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Los Angeles Marymount in the championship match of the Torrey Pines girls’ volleyball tournament.

Engle, who was selected most valuable player of the tournament, had 22 kills in a 26-24, 25-15, 19-25, 18-25, 15-10 victory over Carlsbad La Costa Canyon in a quarterfinal and 21 kills in a 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 semifinal victory over Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World.

Christy Hudson had 29 kills and Chelsey Lowe added 21 in the three victories for the Aztecs (18-3), who are the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I-AA coaches’ poll.

Sonja Newcombe led Rim of the World (17-3), the top-ranked Division III-AA team, in the semifinal with 19 kills. She had 13 kills and eight blocks in a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 quarterfinal victory over San Diego Parker.

Samantha Selsky, a sophomore who tore a knee ligament in last year’s state playoffs, had seven kills and 42 assists in the final for Marymount (16-7), which defeated Huntington Beach Edison in a quarterfinal and Torrey Pines in a semifinal.

Girls’ Tennis

Tania Mahtani and Akane Kitamura each won singles and doubles matches to lead Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula to a 5-4 victory over Torrey Pines in Saturday’s championship match of the Corona del Mar/All-American tournament at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

The senior Mahtani clinched the Panthers’ second title in the tournament with an 8-4 victory over Rebecca Lin at No. 1 singles in the head-to-head eight-game pro-set format. Mahtani also combined with Rika Tatsuno to beat Lin and Rebecca Kwan, 8-7 (7-5), and lead a sweep of three doubles matches by the Panthers, who also won the tournament in 2001 and were runners-up in the inaugural event in 2000.
