Woody Williams was in a jam, just as he had been many times the last two months.

Only this time he pitched well enough to get out of trouble and beat the Milwaukee Brewers.

Williams threw six solid innings to win for the second time in 10 starts, and the San Diego Padres beat host Milwaukee, 6-1, Saturday night.

Williams (7-11) allowed the Brewers to load the bases with none out in the first but retired Carlos Lee, Geoff Jenkins and Bill Hall in order to hold Milwaukee to only one run.

“They have their big boppers coming up and my back is against the wall,” Williams said. “Fortunately, I was able to get out of there with only one run and settle down, make some good pitches.”

The Brewers went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position in the first four innings.

Williams retired 11 of his last 12 batters to end his three-game skid.

Washington 5, Philadelphia 4 -- Preston Wilson’s one-out RBI single in the 12th inning gave the Nationals a victory over the Phillies at Washington.

Jose Guillen walked with one out, advanced to second on a passed ball, then scored on Wilson’s blooper to right off Aquilino Lopez (0-1).

Hector Carrasco (4-3) threw a perfect 12th, although Bobby Abreu hit a drive to center field that Wilson caught with his back against the wall.

Florida 5, New York 4 -- Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run double with two outs in the seventh inning at Miami to cap a comeback by the Marlins, who beat the Mets to give Manager Jack McKeon his 1,000th major league win.

With two runners on in the ninth, Todd Jones retired Carlos Beltran on an easy grounder for his 34th save in 36 chances. He has converted 24 in a row for the Marlins, who are half a game behind wild-card leader Philadelphia.
