Concerns for Seals Lead to Closures of 2 Beaches
Authorities closed two beaches to the public because of concerns that elephant seals were being harassed.
The closures were ordered after officials discovered a large hole hacked in the protective fencing around Arroyo Laguna State Beach, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The fencing keeps people away from a place where elephant seals haul themselves out of the water to rest, escape predators, give birth, care for their pups and molt.
Officials did not witness any seals being harassed but closed Arroyo Laguna and Piedras Blancas beaches as a precaution.
