Loyola Marymount Student Dies in San Diego Area Car Crash

For the second time in five months, a Loyola Marymount student has died in a traffic collision, officials said Sunday.

Allison Dewart, 18, a freshman at the Westchester university, was killed early Saturday on Interstate 15 in San Diego County, according to school officials and the California Highway Patrol.

“We are just doing everything we can to reach out to the family and offer any resources that they may need,” Loyola Marymount spokeswoman Michelle Williams said Sunday.

Dewart was in a Toyota Corolla with four others when it was struck shortly before 2 a.m. by an SUV driving the wrong way on the freeway, the CHP said. The others in the compact car were all injured, at least one of them critically.

The SUV driver also was killed in the accident, which shut down the freeway for about four hours. The name and age of the driver were not released.

The collision caused a traffic backup that led to another accident on the freeway several minutes later when a suspected drunk driver slammed into the back of a big rig and was critically injured, the CHP said. The name and age of the driver were not released.

In August, two Loyola Marymount student-athletes were killed as they were heading for a weekend vacation at Lake Havasu, Ariz. Jessica Hanson, a soccer player, and Adam Bacon, a member of the cross-country team, were killed when the driver of the van they were in lost control of the vehicle. It struck a median and flipped several times on Interstate 40 near Needles.
