Streeter’s 18 Spark Fremont Past Dorsey, 82-75

From Times Staff Reports

Jacques Streeter and Danny Williams often remained long after practice ended last season, challenging each other’s touch from the perimeter.

Williams, a two-time All-City Section guard, has since graduated from Los Angeles Fremont, but he continues to be an inspiration for Streeter and the remaining Pathfinders.

Williams, who suffered near-fatal head injuries in a car accident near Barstow seven months ago, was in attendance Wednesday when Los Angeles Dorsey, ranked No. 24 in the Southland by The Times, played host to No. 12 Fremont in a Coliseum League boys’ basketball game.

Streeter took notice and the junior point guard did his best to impress Williams, making four three-point baskets and scoring 18 points in the Pathfinders’ 82-75 victory.

“After every practice, he always wanted to go against me,” said Streeter, who was a reserve last season. “That’s why I was hitting so many threes tonight, because Danny came, so I wanted to show off for him.”

Streeter made two three-pointers in the second quarter, when the Pathfinders (17-3 overall, 4-0 in league play) outscored Dorsey, 26-10, to take a 14-point halftime lead. Fremont stretched the lead to 20 points after three quarters, but the Dons (12-7, 3-1) cut the deficit to five points on Nigel Carter’s three-point play with 34 seconds left.

Troy Gillenwater scored a game-high 19 points for Fremont before fouling out with three minutes left.

Junior forward Luis Gonzales scored in each half to help Long Beach Millikan to a 3-1 victory over Long Beach Wilson in a Moore League game that went off without a hitch amid tight security at Long Beach College.

The teams were meeting for the first time since a melee halted their Millikan tournament semifinal game Dec. 10.

Handshakes were exchanged before the match and afterward, and in between some rather uneventful soccer was played. Players, coaches and officials couldn’t have been happier.

“The players played soccer, and that’s what it’s all about,” said Wilson Co-Principal Joe Pistoia, who was on the sidelines during the tournament match, when players scuffled, fans streamed onto the field and play was halted in the final minutes.

Two Millikan players were arrested later as a result of their actions and several other players on both sides served suspensions from school.

One of the arrested players was transferred by the Long Beach Unified School District to Lakewood. The other remains at Millikan but Tuesday was banned by a league committee from playing soccer for the remainder of the season.
