Share

Senior Michael Coe of Lompoc Cabrillo, running in his first indoor race, won the Reebok Boston Games high school mile in 4:07.31, defeating Ciaran O’Linaird of Ireland (4:09.41) and A.J. Acosta of Oceanside El Camino (4:10.37).

Coe was content to let others lead before taking over at 880 yards and pulling away. He ran the first half in 2:05.9 and the second half in 2:01.4.

The time makes Coe the seventh-fastest high school indoor miler behind the national record of 3:59.86 set by Alan Webb of Reston (Va.) South Lakes in 2001. The only California runners to better Coe’s time are Thom Hunt of San Diego Henry, who ran 4:02.7 in 1976, and Michael Stember of Carmichael Jesuit, who clocked 4:07.10 in 1996.
