Kline Has 79 to Reach Junior Match Play

MacKinzie Kline of Encinitas, allowed to use a golf cart because of a congenital heart defect, advanced to match play of the U.S. Girls’ Junior golf championship Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C.

Kline, 14, following her opening 72 with a 79 at Carmel Country Club to finish at seven over par, tied for 46th.

Mina Harigae of Monterey shot an eight-under 64 to top the 64 match-play qualifiers. Harigae, 16, had nine birdies and a bogey to finish stroke-play qualifying at six-under 138.

“If I win, my mom said I can get a car,” said Harigae, making her fourth appearance in the tournament.

“If I win the Women’s Am, I get my choice.”

Sixteen-year-old Maria Jose Uribe of Colombia shot her second straight 70 to qualify second at four under, and Isabelle Lendl of Goshen, Conn., the 14-year-old daughter of former tennis star Ivan Lendl, had a 67 to join Lindy Duncan of Plantation, Fla., and Mindy Kim of Diamond Bar at three under.

“Match play is a little different strategy,” Isabelle Lendl said. “I’m not going to give that up. It’s a secret.”

Arnond Vongvanij of Bradenton, Fla., shot a five-under 67 to lead the U.S. Junior Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe.

Vongvanij shot eight-under 136 at Rancho Sana Fe Golf Club, one ahead of Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Calif., and Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz, heading into match play.
