While Taylor Twellman and the New England Revolution were playing their way to another MLS Cup, Freddy Adu sat on the D.C. United bench for much of the second half with his head buried in his gloved hands.

Twellman scored in the fourth minute, and Matt Reis made eight saves Sunday to lead the Revolution to a 1-0 victory over United in the Eastern Conference final at Washington, earning New England a second consecutive appearance in the MLS championship game.

New England will play Houston in next weekend’s MLS Cup at Pizza Hut Park near Dallas. It will be the Revolution’s third appearance in the title game; it lost to the Galaxy in 2002 and again last year.

United controlled the play Sunday, outshooting New England, 18-6. But Reis was always in the way, cutting off the angles.

Adu might have created more scoring chances than any United player -- including a 30-yard blast that forced Reis to stretch to push the ball over the corner of the net -- but the 17-year-old midfielder was removed for a substitute in the 65th minute.

“Very tough way to end it, feeling helpless, sitting on the bench. Can’t really do anything to help your team,” Adu said.

“That’s probably the worst feeling I’ve ever had in my whole life.”

Houston 3, Colorado 1 -- Paul Dalglish scored twice in the first half and Brian Mullan added a goal in the 71st minute to help the Dynamo win the Western Conference final at Houston. Jovan Kirovski’s goal in the third minute after a hand ball by Adrian Serioux gave Colorado a 1-0 lead.

“For the guys to come back from a goal down early was great,” Dynamo Coach Dominic Kinnear said. “I was thinking words you can’t say in public when we got down so quick.”
