Re “They love to do their homework,” Column One, Oct. 11

Having grown up in a Southern Baptist family abroad, it is annoying for me to find out that conservative Baptists preach two versions of the Bible, one for domestic and one for foreign consumption. The foreign version is democracy, human rights and equality for all. The domestic version is only men are equal and women must submit to their husbands unconditionally. The old feudal societies are gone, but the Southern Baptists still cling to feudal practices, and they put words in God’s mouth. That is not democracy.

How can you be whole if you believe your job is to submit to another human being? Such a course is not safe psychologically or physically for women. Nor is it safe for the world. Women must be present in all endeavors to inculcate the scheming men of government that their only job, just like our job, is to raise the next generation to be safe and joyful.

God or nature speaks through women in our kindness, nurturing, art and music, science, advocacy and governance -- all the jobs we do to help the world.

Why so much disdain for these young Christian women who love their homework? Judeo-Christian scriptures have always been used as a guide to navigate family life in the best possible way. The purpose of a man and woman’s union is to raise godly children. God never promised personal happiness, but he does promise other blessings. I’m sure my husband doesn’t love his long hours, meetings, weekend work and office politics, but he does enjoy the knowledge that his home and children are being taken care of by a woman who loves only him. And I enjoy that we have a roof over our heads, good food on the table, clothes in the closet and the knowledge that when my children are sick, I can sit on the sofa with them and watch TV.

Southern Baptist men apparently selectively quote a few ludicrous passages from the Bible, and some women actually give up their humanity in exchange for unquestioning servitude. Just one more little thing is missing -- burkas.
