Boise State knows how to start off the weekend

Friday night may be better known for high school football but around the Western Athletic Conference, it’s a night owned by Boise State.

The Broncos (6-1) will attempt to continue their Friday dominance tonight when they travel to Fresno State (5-2) in a key conference game. Boise State, a three-point favorite over the Bulldogs, is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight Friday games.

That’s bad news for Fresno State, which is 1-4 against the spread in its last five Friday games and 1-10 against the spread in its last 11 games against a team with a winning record.

Boise State, which has won the last five league titles, has won 44 of its last 45 WAC games. But Fresno State is the last team to defeat the Broncos in conference play and Boise State is not expected to have leading rusher Ian Johnson, who sat out last week’s victory over Louisiana Tech because of a bruised kidney.

Last add: The Broncos are 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games as a road favorite.

Undefeated Arizona State (7-0) has been a steady three-point home favorite over California (5-2) throughout the week and the Sun Devils will be looking to break a negative betting trend Saturday night.

In their last six games against Cal, the Sun Devils are 1-5 on the field and 1-5 against the spread, including a 49-21 loss last season in a game that opened with the Bears favored by 8 1/2 points.

Side note: Cal is 3-4 against the spread this season and has been favored in six games.

In the same league that boasts the high-scoring New England Patriots, who have won every game this season by at least 17 points, the NFL also has Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, two teams that will meet Sunday.

Oddsmakers think so much of the Buccaneers vs. Jaguars matchup, they have given the game an over/under total between 32 and 33 1/2 points this week. The over/under for New England’s home game against Washington? 47 1/2 to 48 1/2 points.

Final add: The under is 4-1 in Tampa Bay’s last five home games and 4-1 in Jacksonville’s last five games in October.
