Santa Ana Mater Dei certainly isn’t the only school in the Southland with a proud history in boys’ basketball. Here is a look at some of the region’s other more notable teams in the last 25 years (limit, one entry per school):

Lakewood Artesia (33-2), 2006-07 -- Guard James Harden and center Renardo Sidney led the Pioneers to a 91-64 victory over Oakland Bishop O’Dowd in the state Division III championship game, giving Artesia its second consecutive state title and sixth overall.

Los Angeles Westchester (32-2), 2001-02 -- The Comets won a third consecutive City Section title and then held off Oakland Tech, 80-75, in the state Division I championship game paced by Hassan Adams, Ashanti Cook, Brandon Heath, Bobby Brown, Brandon Bowman, Scott Cutley and Trevor Ariza.

Compton Dominguez (35-2), 1999-2000 -- The Tyson Chandler-led Dons won a second consecutive Division II state title and fourth state championship in five years with a 53-41 victory over Newark Memorial.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (36-1), 1996-97 -- Twins Jarron and Jason Collins led the Wolverines to an 80-50 rout of previously unbeaten San Mateo Hillsdale in the state Division III title game.

Los Angeles Crenshaw (29-2), 1993-94 -- A deep Cougars team that featured Tremaine Fowlkes, Kris Johnson and Tommie Davis set a Division I state title game record for points during an 89-79 victory over Carmichael Jesuit.

Los Angeles Manual Arts (27-3), 1987-88 -- Led by guards Chris Small and Wayne Williams, the Toilers received a surprising at-large bid to the state Division I playoffs after losing to Crenshaw in the City 4-A final. But Manual Arts defeated the Cougars in the Southern California regional final and toppled Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, 54-53, in the Division I state title game.

Los Angeles Fairfax (26-1), 1986-87 -- With Arizona-bound forward Chris Mills and Michigan-bound swingman Sean Higgins leading the way, the Lions won their first 26 games, including an 86-58 victory over Reseda Cleveland in the City 4-A title game. But Fairfax was stunned by Mater Dei, 46-42, in the Southern California regional final.

Glendale (28-0), 1984-85 -- Behind point guard Rich Grande and center Jan Svoboda, the Dynamiters defeated Compton Dominguez, 52-49, to win the Southern Section 4-A title. But neither Glendale nor undefeated Mater Dei advanced to the state playoffs because Southland league presidents were concerned about costs and the length of the season.

Long Beach Poly (31-2), 1983-84 -- The Jackrabbits, paced by forward Chris Sandle and guard Terry Stallworth, defeated Mater Dei in the Southern Section 4A title game, edged Crenshaw in the Southern California regional championship and then routed San Francisco St. Ignatius, 65-45, in the state Division I title game.
