DIVISION III

Ventura St. Bonaventure (13-1) vs. Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman (13-0)noon, Home Depot Center,

Prime Ticket

St. Bonaventure is vying for its second consecutive bowl victory after defeating Modesto Central Catholic, 35-21, last season in the Division III game. Cardinal Newman made it to the Division III game in 2006 and took Westlake Village Oaks Christian into overtime before falling, 27-20. Cardinals quarterback Randy Wright has completed an astounding 70.9% of his passes this season for 2,571 yards and 30 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Four receivers have totaled at least 400 yards, led by Amaral Wade, who has made 44 catches for 731 yards and 14 touchdowns. Cardinal Newman must contend with St. Bonaventure’s running-back-by-committee approach, which has effectively trampled every opponent except Long Beach Poly. Devon Blackledge and Patrick Hall have combined for 1,895 yards and each is averaging a tick over nine yards a carry. The Seraphs have won nine in a row since a 12-7 setback against the Jackrabbits in October.

The pick: St. Bonaventure.

Cathedral running back Tyler Gaffney has accounted for a San Diego County-record 51 touchdowns this season, including four last week during the Dons’ 49-13 victory over El Cajon Valhalla in the San Diego Section Division III championship game. St. Mary’s quarterback Cody Vaz, who has signed with Oregon State, has passed for 3,510 yards and 28 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Josh Harper, the Rams’ leading receiver, is questionable because of a twisted right ankle suffered last week.

The pick: Cathedral.
