Florida State puts all its teams on probation

Florida State’s sports teams will be on self-imposed probation for two years and some will lose scholarships because of an academic cheating scandal, the university said in a report released Thursday.

The university said that about 60 student-athletes also have or will lose some eligibility. Two staff members, a tutor and learning specialist, have been fired. No additional dismissals were listed.

Former Southern Illinois coach Jerry Kill sued the school, disputing claims he owes nearly $58,000 for breaking his contract. Kill resigned in December to coach Northern Illinois.

Birmingham Southern College coach Joey Jones was hired as South Alabama’s first football coach. The program will begin play in 2009 and move to full Division I-A membership in 2013 as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

Indiana University spokesman Larry MacIntyre said President Michael McRobbie was consulting with the school’s lawyers, trustees and administrators over the fate of basketball Coach Kelvin Sampson, who is accused of NCAA rules violations.

Dolphins release linebacker Thomas

Zach Thomas, a seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker, was released by the Miami Dolphins. Thomas, 34, said he plans to play with another team next season. . . . The Buffalo Bills released wide receiver Peerless Price.

Typo spurs erroneous Bonds drug reports

A typo in court papers regarding Barry Bonds filed by federal prosecutors touched off a brief tempest over the mistaken belief that the former San Francisco Giants slugger failed a drug test in November 2001, one month after the record for home runs in a season.

In fact, the government meant to reference a previously reported November 2000 failed drug test, U.S. attorney spokesman Josh Eaton said. That drug test was included in the indictment unsealed last year, when prosecutors said the test was for a player they called “Barry B.”

Cy Young Award winner C.C. Sabathia has tabled contract talks with the Cleveland Indians.

The left-hander, who is eligible for free agency after the 2008 season, said on his website that he and his agents have broken off negotiations on an extension with the club.

The Indians recently offered Sabathia a four-year extension believed to be worth $17 million to $18 million per season.

Coach in recruiting hoax files lawsuit

A Nevada high school football coach filed a defamation suit against school district officials, accusing them of trying to make him the scapegoat in an embarrassing recruiting hoax.

Fernley High Coach Mark Hodges is seeking more than $20,000 from the Lyon County School District and school board members after the scam in which Kevin Hart, one of Hodges’ players, claimed he had been recruited to play for California.

The lawsuit accuses school district officials of slandering Hodges by providing unsubstantiated information that a Reno television station used in a report that Hodges’ contract would not be renewed next year because of “unprofessional conduct and fiscal irresponsibility.”

Suspended NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones settled his last pending criminal charge, pleading no contest to obstructing a police officer two years ago in Georgia.

Beckham expresses concern for Ronaldo

David Beckham said that he hopes his former Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo will recover from his latest injury and that the Brazilian striker and two-time world champion will not be forced into premature retirement.

Ronaldo, the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history and a three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, ruptured a ligament in his left knee after coming on as a substitute in AC Milan’s Italian league match against Livorno on Wednesday.

“It’s sad to see that he’s got another injury, but he’s come back from many bad injuries before,” Beckham said.
