FRISCO, Texas -- Maykel Galindo scored in the 84th minute to lift Chivas USA to a 1-1 tie with FC Dallas in the teams’ Major League Soccer season opener Sunday.

Galindo, who entered the game in the 55th minute as a substitute for forward Atiba Harris, fired a shot from 17 yards that went through the legs of FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala and into the center of the net.

Galindo played a loose ball that had bounced off the leg of FC Dallas defender Duilio Davino and fired a shot from the top of the penalty box for an unassisted goal.

Chivas’ Justin Braun had a chance to score in second-half stoppage time, but his header from the top of the goal box drifted wide right of the net in the 91st minute.

Sala finished with eight saves. Brad Guzan had four saves for Chivas USA.

Chivas USA outshot FC Dallas, 22-8, for the game and 18-4 in the second half.

Juan Toja scored for FC Dallas in the 21st minute. Abe Thompson tapped a pass between two defenders to Toja, who took possession of the ball with his left foot before curling a shot from outside the top left corner of the goal box and into the right corner of the net.

Toja and Thompson almost combined for another goal in the 34th minute after Toja sent a cross to Thompson from 35 yards away, but Thompson’s shot from 12 yards went high over the right post.

Chivas USA captain Claudio Suarez missed the game to be with his family in Mexico after his father died Friday morning from heart failure. Chivas players wore black arm bands to honor Suarez’s father.
