There was a major shake-up in the Baseline League on Friday night, about four miles from the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga.

Visiting Rancho Cucamonga High upset cross-town rival Los Osos, 27-21, after quarterback Greg Watson ran seven yards for the winning score in overtime to secure the Cougars’ first victory in the series since 2003.

Rancho Cucamonga, unranked in the Southland by The Times, assumed sole possession of first place in the Baseline League after improving to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0 in league. No. 9 Los Osos (6-2, 2-1) fell into a three-way tie for second with No. 20 Upland and Etiwanda.

“With all the talk about Los Osos and Upland, we kind of flew under the radar for a while,” Coach Nick Baiz said Saturday. “Our kids just want the respect they deserve and beating a quality team and a quality quarterback, I think it’s a step in that direction.”

With UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel having arrived via helicopter late in the game, Watson upstaged Los Osos counterpart Richard Brehaut, who has committed to the Bruins. Brehaut helped the Grizzlies rally twice in the fourth quarter but was sacked and threw an illegal pass in overtime.

Watson passed for 163 yards and rushed for 108 yards for Rancho Cucamonga, which could clinch at least a share of the league title Friday with a victory over Alta Loma (3-5, 0-3) at Chaffey College.

Streak in jeopardy

Newhall Hart’s 38-7 Foothill League loss to host Valencia put the Indians in an unfamiliar spot: needing at least one more victory late in the season to qualify for the playoffs.

Hart last missed the Southern Section playoffs in 1980 and has qualified in all 19 seasons under Coach Mike Herrington. But the Indians (3-5, 1-2), locked in a three-way tie for third place in the league standings, need to defeat either Valencia West Ranch (2-6, 1-2) on Friday or Santa Clarita Golden Valley (3-5, 0-3) on Nov. 14 to have a chance at keeping alive the long-running streak.

If Hart won both games, it would automatically represent its league in the playoffs as the third-place entrant. If the Indians split, their fortunes could rest on a coin flip.
