Mater Dei beats Servite, 42-21, to extend streak

The infamous streak involving Orange County’s biggest rivals remains intact.

Senior running back Jaron Hytche rushed for 199 yards and had two touchdowns as Santa Ana Mater Dei (4-2, 1-0) extended its unbeaten streak against Anaheim Servite (3-3, 0-1) to 20 games with a 42-21 victory in front of a crowd of about 10,000 at Cal State Fullerton on Friday night.

Mater Dei dominated the second half, holding Servite to 57 total offensive yards in the final 24 minutes. The Monarchs then cushioned their lead with a couple of touchdown runs by Jordan Allen, who finished with 55 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley completed 21 of 25 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns.

Servite’s Cody Fajardo connected on 14 of 23 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown even though he was pressured most of the night by Mater Dei’s swarming pass rush. Greg Portis finished with 155 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries.

Christian Maldonado blocked a Servite field-goal attempt in the first quarter and recovered a second-half fumble that essentially ended the Friars’ comeback hopes.

Donald Jarrin’s 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter nudged host San Pedro (6-0, 1-0 league) to a 6-5 victory over Carson in a L.A. City Marine League opener.

The Colts (2-4, 0-1) had taken a 5-3 lead with 4:04 left in the third quarter after downing a punt at the San Pedro one-yard line and tackling Pirates running back Cristian Farrow in the end zone for a safety on the next play.

But quarterback Barry Heads completed all three of his passes for 49 yards on San Pedro’s next drive to set up Jarrin’s second field goal. He also kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Quarterback Daniel Torres completed 17 of 37 passes for 190 yards for Carson, which lost three of its five fumbles.

“Even with the turnovers, we had plenty of chances to win the game,” Carson Coach Michael Christensen said. “We just made too many mistakes.”

Westlake Village Oaks Christian’s Malcolm Jones rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns in 13 carries to lead the eighth-ranked Lions to a 61-0 Tri-Valley League victory over Santa Barbara Bishop Diego (1-5, 0-1). Oaks Christian quarterback Nick Montana played only the first half and completed eight of 11 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown for the Lions (6-0, 1-0). . . . Davanti Wilson scored three touchdowns to lead No. 17 Orange Lutheran to a 35-3 Trinity League victory over San Juan Capistrano at Saddleback College. . . . L.A. Wilson quarterback Jonathan Ruiz completed 18 of 29 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Mules to a 42-14 victory over L.A. Belmont (4-2, 0-1) in a Northern League City matchup. Cole Martinez finished with a game-high nine catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns for Wilson (4-2, 1-0). . . . Running back Daniel Vargas rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns to lead Bell Gardens (3-3, 1-0) to a 45-20 Almont League victory over Montebello (2-4, 0-1). . . . Quarterback Keith Prince rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 15 Bellflower St. John Bosco to a 47-21 win over Santa Margarita. Prince also completed 17 of 20 passes for 273 yards for the Braves (6-0). . . . USC-bound James Boyd accounted for six touchdowns and 423 yards passing to lead L.A.
