at No. 7 Louisiana State 41, North Texas 3: Charles Scott ran for touchdowns of 39 and 43 yards, Trindon Holliday scored on a 92-yard punt return, and the Tigers (2-0), coming off an unscheduled open date caused by Hurricane Gustav, cruised past winless North Texas at Baton Rouge. The dominant victory came at a price -- starting linebacker Darry Beckwith left the game with an apparent right knee injury. LSU officials did not specify the extent of the injury. The Tigers’ Sept. 6 game against Troy was postponed until Nov. 15 after Gustav struck Baton Rouge.

at No. 11 Alabama 41, Western Kentucky 7: John Parker Wilson passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns and freshman Mark Ingram ran for two scores for the Crimson Tide (3-0), which rolled up 557 yards at Tuscaloosa.

at Kentucky 20, Middle Tennessee State 14: Robbie McAtee tackled Eldred King at the one-yard line as time expired, enabling the Wildcats (3-0) to avert an upset against the Blue Raiders (1-2) at Lexington.

at Tennessee 35, Alabama Birmingham 3: Jonathan Crompton threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns at Knoxville as the Volunteers (1-1) rebounded from a poor offensive effort in their loss to UCLA on Sept. 1.

at Vanderbilt 38, Rice 21: Jared Hawkins rushed for 107 yards and the Commodores’ defense held the Owls scoreless in the second half at Nashville, Tenn. Vanderbilt is 3-0 for only the third time since 1984.

at Mississippi 34, Samford 10: Marshay Green scored on a 77-yard punt return and the Rebels (2-1) scored 31 unanswered points at Oxford to easily defeat the Bulldogs of the Championship Subdivision.
