A look at some of the Southland’s top high school football games:

No. 2 Corona Centennial (1-0) vs. No. 3 Santa Ana Mater Dei (2-0)

Tonight at Santa Ana Stadium, 7:30

* Don’t expect a repeat of last season, when these teams combined for a state-record 1,302 yards during Mater Dei’s 51-37 victory. Monarchs quarterback Matt Barkley, who accounted for 364 of his team’s 621 yards, is the only key playmaker returning from that game. “We have to do a lot of improving to match the numbers, at least from our end . . .” Huskies Coach Matt Logan said. “If they score 40, we’re in trouble.”

* The pick: Mater Dei.

No. 6 Anaheim Servite (2-0) at No. 4 Encino Crespi (2-0)

Tonight at 7:30

* As if the thought of playing his former team for the second time in 10 months wasn’t enough to give Servite Coach Troy Thomas sleepless nights, his wife earlier this week gave birth to the couple’s fourth child, a girl. Crespi defeated Servite, 13-10, last year in a Pac-5 Division semifinal.

* The pick: Crespi.

No. 5 Mission Viejo (2-0) at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon (2-0)

Tonight at 7

* It’s frightening to think what Mission Viejo quarterback Allan Bridgford might accomplish in a full game. In less than two quarters in the Diablos’ opener, Bridgford threw four touchdown passes. In little more than two quarters last week during Mission Viejo’s 58-20 victory over Redondo Beach, he passed for five touchdowns. La Costa Canyon , one of the top teams in San Diego County, is coming off a 52-3 victory over Carlsbad in which the Mavericks scored on all five of their first-half possessions.

* The pick: Mission Viejo.

No. 17 Los Angeles Loyola (2-0) vs. Concord De La Salle (1-0)

Saturday at Glendale High, 7

* De La Salle had a 151-game winning streak from 1992 through 2003, and stretched its current streak to 14 last week with a 29-28 victory over San Mateo Serra, made possible when the Spartans turned a botched extra-point snap into a winning two-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter. Loyola, seeking to push consecutive 4-6 seasons into the background, features running back Anthony Barr, who is averaging 201.5 yards rushing a game, and a defense that has yielded a total of seven points in two games.
