No. 4 Crespi defeats No. 6 Servite

Junior quarterback Bryan Bennett completed 11 of 21 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns and senior wide receiver Kevin Cummings scored two touchdowns, the first of which came on a 31-yard interception return, to push Encino Crespi (3-0), ranked No. 4 by The Times, to a 21-20 victory over visiting No. 6 Anaheim Servite (2-1) on Friday night.

Servite quarterback Cody Fajardo connected on 15 of 23 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Greg Portis rushed for 164 yards. Southern Methodist-bound kicker Michael Loftus missed a 57-yard field-goal attempt for Servite as time expired, as the Friars suffered their second loss to Crespi in less than a year.

Boron comes back for win

Jubilation turned to sorrow moments after Boron High completed a stunning, come-from-behind 36-35 victory over host Lake Isabella Kern Valley because the Bobcats couldn’t share their triumph with fallen teammate Vinnie Rodriguez.

After Kern Valley (1-2) missed a potential winning 35-yard field-goal attempt on the game’s final play, Boron players pointed skyward in honor of the sophomore running back and safety who died Tuesday from head injuries sustained in a game last week.

The Bobcats (3-0) had trailed, 35-22, with 5 minutes 26 seconds left before capping a scoring drive with an extra point that hit the crossbar and tumbled over it after bouncing high in the air. Boron then forced a fumble and scored five plays later on Joshua Glass’ one-yard run with 27 seconds left. Carlos Soto’s extra point provided the winning margin.

“Maybe we were getting help from somewhere else, huh?” Bobcats Coach Todd Fink said.

The teams met at midfield after the game and released balloons into the air as a tribute to Rodriguez. “It’s for Vinnie, boys!” shouted Boron running back Israel Lucas, who scored a 45-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Marquee matchup

Loyola will play Concord De La Salle at Glendale High tonight at 7, hoping to end the Spartans’ 14-game winning streak -- a string modest only when compared to the record 151 consecutive games De La Salle won from 1992-2003.

And a key player the Cubs will be looking to stop is Blake Wayne, a 5-foot-10 senior who runs the team’s veer offense so well that not even a talented, strong-armed kid with the last name Montana could challenge him.
