Ayala’s Jessica Hall is The Times’ softball player of the year

Jessica Hall, Chino Hills Ayala, Pitcher, Sr.: The Gatorade state player of the year pitched four shutouts in the playoffs en route to the Bulldogs’ first championship. She had a 28-3 record, a 0.68 earned-run average and 336 strikeouts in 204 2/3 innings. She batted .340 with five home runs and 32 runs batted in. Next season, she’ll play for national champion UCLA.

Kayla Massey, Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills, Pitcher, Sr.: Another two-way threat, she had a 23-2 record with a 0.32 ERA and 247 strikeouts in 195 innings. She batted .376 with five home runs and 16 RBIs. She’s headed to Iowa.

Cheyenne Coyle, Chatsworth, Utility, Sr.: She led the Chancellors to the City Section championship game and finished the season with a 20-3 record from the mound where, in 135 innings, she had 150 strikeouts and a 0.93 ERA. The Florida-bound slugger batted .528 with 10 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 40 RBIs.

Taylor Edwards, Vista Murrieta, Catcher, Sr.: In her career, she hit 38 home runs. As a senior, she batted .425 with nine home runs and 28 RBIs. She will play for Nebraska.

Madison Shipman, Valencia, Shortstop, Sr.: She helped carry the Vikings to a Division 1 semifinal, hitting .444 with nine doubles, nine home runs and 36 RBIs. She will play for Tennessee.

Lauren Chamberlain, Lake Forest El Toro, Shortstop, Jr.: The Oklahoma recruit hit an Orange County-record 17 home runs and batted .512 with five doubles, three triples and 39 RBIs. She was walked 28 times.

Marisa Bast, Villa Park, Shortstop, Sr.: She batted .430 with three doubles, four home runs and 20 RBIs with 11 stolen bases. She will play for Northwestern.

Sandy Simmons, Huntington Beach Marina, Infielder, So.: The Louisiana State recruit had a .486 batting average, was walked 16 times and scored 31 runs.

Nicole Sappingfield, Norco, Outfielder, Sr.: She batted .523 with six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 18 RBIs with 13 stolen bases. She will play for Michigan.

Hallie Wilson, Santa Ana Foothill, Outfielder, Jr.: She batted .432 with six doubles, three triples and six home runs. The Arizona recruit scored 37 runs and was walked 21 times.

Mary Massei, Chino Hills Ayala, Outfielder, Sr.: With her team trailing, 4-0, in the fifth inning of the Southern Section Division 3 championship game, Massei hit a grand slam to help lift the Bulldogs to a 5-4 victory over Downey Warren. She batted .487 with nine doubles, three triples and two home runs.

Player of the year: Hall.

Coach of the year: Jo Ann Byrd, Corona.
