Long Beach Poly-Lakewood among top matchups

Long Beach Poly (3-2) vs. Lakewood (5-0) at Veterans Stadium, 7:30 p.m. Tyler Schultz, a baseball player, is playing quarterback so well that Lakewood fans haven’t missed Jesse Scroggins, now a freshman at USC. Schultz has thrown 14 touchdown passes and only one interception. But this is the big test, a Moore League title showdown on TV against a Poly team that has lots of speed. Schultz has two of the best junior receivers in Darius Powe and Malik Gilmore. Lakewood ended Poly’s 80-game league winning streak last season. Poly hasn’t played well against top teams this season, getting routed by Ventura St. Bonaventure and Mission Viejo. It’s going to take an error-free performance from quarterback Chaiyse Hales to stay in this one. The pick: Lakewood.

Los Angeles Loyola (2-3) at Valencia (4-0), 7 p.m. Valencia hasn’t scored fewer than 45 points. Steven Manfro is averaging 13.5 yards per carry and has scored eight touchdowns rushing, four receiving and two on special teams. Quarterback Alex Bishop has completed 69% of his passes with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. Junior Andrew Magana is expected to replace Jerry Neuheisel (concussion) at quarterback for the second consecutive game for Loyola, which upset Upland, 30-13, last week. The pick: Valencia.

Woodland Hills Taft (2-2) at Encino Crespi (4-1), 7 p.m. It’s going to be a passing circus. Crespi has one of the hottest quarterbacks in Southern California in Kenny Stenhouse, who has completed 96 of 130 passes for 1,382 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has twice set school records for passing yards in a game, with 424 and 486 yards. Taft quarterback Michael Bercovici set a school record with 474 yards passing against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. The pick: Crespi.

Redlands East Valley (3-1) at Mission Viejo (5-0), 7:30 p.m. How many teams can keep winning without their best player? That’s what Mission Viejo has done the last two weeks waiting for linebacker-quarterback Tre Madden to get his injured foot healed. Running back Dallas Kessman has provided a big lift with lots of production. Redlands East Valley demonstrated in a win over Orange Lutheran that it has the defense to play well against a top opponent. The pick: Mission Viejo.
