Showtime’s drama “The Affair” capped its first season with a breakthrough win as TV drama series at Sunday’s Golden Globes.

“The Affair” stars British actors Dominic West and Ruth Wilson as a couple engaged in an extramarital affair. The story unfolds through the differing perspectives of teacher-novelist Noah (West) and his romantic interest, mourning waitress Alison (Wilson).

Despite widespread critical acclaim, “The Affair” has yet to build a sizable audience. Initial airings through the first season averaged fewer than 1 million total viewers, according to Nielsen.
