Paula Kerdpinyo hit her first hole in one when she was 10 and has yet to hit another. But she accomplished an even bigger first Wednesday--winning the Los Angeles City Section girls’ golf championship.

Battling wet and breezy conditions on the front nine, the freshman from Los Angeles Marshall High shot a seven-over-par 79 to win the individual title by one stroke over Granada Hills junior Alyson Golditch at Balboa Golf Course in Encino.

“I thought I’d make the cut but I didn’t really expect to win,” said Kerdpinyo, one of 10 players who qualified as individuals for the Southern California Regional Championships November 24 in Calimesa. “I didn’t really know how close it was because I just focus on my own score. I don’t worry about what anyone else is doing.”

Playing in the lead group, both Kerdpinyo and Golditch were three-over-par at the turn. Kerdpinyo held a three-stroke lead with two holes to play, but she bogeyed the 17th while Golditch sank a 15-foot uphill birdie to pull within a stroke. Both players bogeyed the 18th, Kerpinyo rolling a 25-foot par putt within two inches of the cup.

Also qualifying individually were Trisha Ariyasu and Christine Nguyen of Venice, Gloria Park and Alice Lee of Chatsworth, Tori Leon of Franklin, Kristine Nakanishi of Birmingham, Stephanie Foster of Palisades, Mary Oliver of Monroe and Lauren Ino of LACES.

Granada Hills won its third consecutive team title with a score of 471 and will advance to the Southern California Regionals along with runner-up North Hollywood (527). Chatsworth (531) was third, followed by Venice (532) and LACES (597).
