The No. 2 doubles team of freshman Jennifer Chow and junior Avni Patel rallied from a 1-4 deficit to defeat Villa Park’s No. 2 doubles team, 6-4, as the Warriors (2-2) took a 4-2 lead after the first round of round-robin competition at Troy.Cosmina Ciobanu defeated the Spartan’ No. 2 and No. 3 singles players by 6-0 scores for Troy, No. 9 in the Times’ rankings, but she did not play against Villa Park senior Lindsey Nelson, the Southern Section individual tournament runner-up the past two seasons, because of a deep bruise on her left hip. Ciobanu sustained the injury in a junior-circuit event last weekend.The Warriors’ other top player, junior Clare Fermin, lost to Nelson, 6-0, but won her other two sets by the same score.

The Sea Kings got a three victories from from their No. 2 doubles team of Hayley Young and Jami Steele, and Corona del Mar was within striking distance for most of the match as Beverly Hills dropped two sets by 6-4 scores and lost another set in a tiebreaker.
