DIVISION II

Marlborough 9, Palm Desert 6
No. 4-seeded Palm Desert, the defending Southern Section Division II champion, was eliminated from the playoffs and Marlborough advanced to the semifinals on the basis of games won after Tuesday’s quarterfinal match between the teams was suspended because of darkness and left incomplete.

The match, at Palm Desert, was not played at least until one team had won 10 sets Tuesday or finished Wednesday even though three matches were still going on when the match was called just after 5 p.m. Tuesday because, according to a tally by coaches, Marlborough would have won on games, 81-77, even if Palm Desert (17-4) had won the remaining matches.

Marlborough (12-5), which has won six consecutive Sunshine League titles, is scheduled to face Fullerton Troy in the semifinals Thursday.

Several matches included line-call disputes that slowed play and caused contention because between the teams.”It was ugly there at the end, and mathematically, we wouldn’t have had enough games anyway,” Palm Desert Coach Randy Blalock said.
