DAVE MOHS MEMORIAL

Division I

Esperanza d. Corona del Mar 25-16, 25-14
Throughout the championship rounds, the 10th-ranked Aztecs played some strong defense and relied on the deadly cross-court swing of opposite Ashley Engle to earn their first appearance in a Mohs final. In their toughest match of the day in Saturday's first round, Esperanza rallied from a game-down to upend defending San Diego Section champion San Dieguito Torrey Pines in three games. Engle led the way with several key kills. She had another fine outing in a quarterfinal sweep of No. 5 Newport Harbor. Then, in the semifinal against Corona del Mar, Engle sent a pair of key kills to the floor for 19-12 and 21-14 leads, then ended the first game with another signature point. Back-to-back aces by Nicole Chiya gave Esperanza an overwhelming 22-12 lead in the second game. An exhausted Corona del Mar, which had been stretched to three games earlier in the day in victories over Irvine Northwood and Huntington Beach, handed Esperanza its final three points on unforced errors. Esperanza plays Los Gatos, which swept Huntington Beach Edison in the other semifinal, in Monday's championship game. That match follows the Division II final and will be played at Edison.
