Tournament MVP Ashley Engle, who had 71 kills in eight tournament games, had 10 kills, and all-tournament selections, Kelli Attawa and Brittany Lowe had seven kills and six kills respectively for Esperanza (16-1), ranked No. 1 in CIF Division I-AA.

Setter Nicole Berberet had 26 assists and spread the ball between four hitters and Kim Taylor keyed the Aztecs defense with 12 digs in the final match.

Sonja Newcombe was selected to the all-tournament team after recording 79 kills and 30 blocks in four two-set matches and three single-game playoff matches Saturday as unbeaten Rim of the World won the 12-team tournament.

Newcombe had 23 kills against Corona Santiago in the tournament title match. Teammate Nique Fradella had 188 assists on the day for Rim of the World (7-0).

Megan Burch and Karis Johnston each had 12 kills for Riverside Christian (5-0). Aquinas falls to 1-4.

Rosary d. Fullerton 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 16-14
In a matchup of neighboring rivals and ranked teams in the Southern Section, Rosary (7-2) withstood a wild Fullerton comeback and a match-high 32 kills from Jaimarie Sutherland to log the victory in the three-hour match at Fullerton.

Down 13-10 in the fifth game, Sutherland served four consecutive aces to give Fullerton (4-1), ranked eighth in Division II-A, a 14-13 lead. Sutherland attempted another jump serve, which Rosary dug out and the ball fell onto Fullerton’s side to tie the game.

Rosary defensive specialist Amanda LaBerge served consecutive aces to help give the Royals the hard-fought victory. Erin Wilson led Rosary, ranked fourth in Division III-A, with 28 kills while Amy Hultner added 18 kills and a team-leading 14 digs.

Katie Finley had 10 of her 30 kills for the Warriors (2-3) in the fourth game of a nonleague victory at La Verne Calvary Baptist (0-6).

Senior middle blocker Christina Handayan had 10 kills and five aces and Meghan Stone added eight kills for host San Marino (3-2). Burbank is 2-2.

Santa Margarita d. Brea Olinda, 25-12, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15
Blair Socci had 17 kills and 25 digs and Beth Wildermuth had 40 assists to lead Santa Margarita (6-5). Rachel Lumsden had a match-high 22 kills and Nikki Awaa had 33 assists and four blocks for host Brea Olinda (1-7).

Brandy Barnett had six of her team-high 21 kills and Sarah Mandala three of her 13 kills for St. Lucy’s (7-1) in the decisive last game at Alta Loma. Liz Dworak had 21 digs and Krista Friedman had 16 digs to for the Regents, who were runners-up in the Mayfair tournament last weekend.
