DIVISION I

Mira Costa d. San Diego Torrey Pines, 25-22, 25-15, 25-21
Alix Klineman had 14 kills, 18 digs and five aces, Lauren Bledsoe had 10 kills and two blocks, Michelle Kandell had 14 digs and Taylor Carico had seven kills, two blocks, 10 digs and 34 assists for host and top-seeded Mira Costa.

The Mustnangs will host Chaparral on Tuesday, a team they beat in the Southern Section Division I-A final.

Mira Costa has yet to lose a game in the playoffs and has a 21-match winning streak, dating back to a Bay League loss to South Torrance.

Chaparral d. Bakersfield Stockdale, 25-13, 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-5

DIVISION II

Edison d. South Torrance, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18
The game plan for the Huntington Beach Edison girls volleyball team always begins with its serves, and Saturday night they were the key in a 25-16, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18 victory over South Torrance in the second round of the state Division II playoffs Saturday night at Edison.

The Chargers (25-6) kept South Torrance (22-9) off balance with an array of tough serving, mostly from sophomore Kari Pestolesi, who served 26 points in the match and had five aces.

Pestolesi also had 13 kills and 19 digs in a well-balanced performance, but her tough jump serve gave South Torrance fits in a match between teams that both won Southern Section titles for the first time in school history.

Edison will play Santa Ana Mater Dei Tuesday in the Southern California Regional final, a rematch of the Southern Section Division II-AA final.

“Sometimes it just comes,” Pestolesi said of her serve. “When I get going like that, I’m just so focused.”

Colleen Burke, who finished with 22 kills, had three kills in the first seven points of the match to set the tone as Edison, the Division II-AA champion, raced to a 6-1 lead and was not seriously threatened in the first game.

South Torrance, the Division II-A champion, took the second game but Burke again set the tone in game three with four kills in the first 10 points to give Edison a 7-3 lead. South Torrance closed the gap to 10-7, but Edison used tough serving during a 12-2 run to put the game away.

The final game was tight, with Edison holding an 12-10 lead, but a long rally eventually won by Edison gave the Chargers a 14-10 lead and seemed to deflate South Torrance. Edison opened a 21-13 lead and eventually closed the match on a block by Pestolesi.

“Serving and passing is the key to our success,” Edison Coach Trent Jackson said. “When we do those things well, we’re going to have a good chance to win and tonight we did those things well, especially the serving. Pesto was feeling it.”

Edison’s balanced attack included 11 kills and 14 digs from Ashley Collier and 11 kills and 13 digs from Kelly Hyder.

Annie Meyers paced South Torrance with 13 kills and 16 digs. Lauren McLaughlin added 13 kills and 10 digs and Kacey Martinez had 30 assists.

Mater Dei d. San Diego Scripps Ranch, 30-28, 24-26, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12
Mallorie Croal had 30 kills -- including eight each in the third and fourth games -- to go with 36 digs and three aces and Chelsea Pavlik finished with 22 kills, 40 digs and seven aces to lead Mater Dei (27-4) to a victory at San Diego Scripps Ranch (26-8).

Taylor Carroll had a kill that gave the No. 2-seeded Monarchs a 12-10 edge in the last game. After Scripps Ranch pulled within 12-11, Croal had her last kill and Dana Van Voohis had a block. After another point for Scripps Ranch, Pavlik recorded her last kill to close out the victory for Mater Dei, the Southern Section Division I-AA runner-up.

Carroll and Van Voorhis each had 10 kills in the match and Mater Dei setter Allison Kincheloe finished with a career-high 61 assists, 15 digs and two aces.

DIVISION III

Rim of the World d. Santa Margarita, 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18
Junior middle blocker Sonja Newcombe had 16 kills and 11 blocks and Sarah Hanson had seven kills and five blocks for Rim of the World (27-1), which avenged a loss to Santa Margarita in the Southern Section Division III-AA final.

The Fighting Scots play at University of San Diego on Tuesday. Rim of the World defeated Scripps Ranch, which took University of San Diego to five games, earlier this season. Santa Margarita finished at 23-14.

University of San Diego d. Corona del Mar, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 17-25, 15-12

Sue Carls finished with 25 kills and 12 blocks, Jamie Sabol added 17 kills and 10 blocks and Alex Ayres had 20 kills in the victory for Marymount (31-8), which played without starting outside hitter Megan Tryon, who was ill.

Ayres, who is a freshman, and Kerry Hance, a defensive specialist, picked up the slack.

“I don’ t have any outside hitters on my bench, so I had to move Kerry there and that’s when we began the turnaround,” Coach Cari Klein said.

Hance had 37 digs, four aces and seven kills and Erin Thompson had 29 digs for the Sailors. Western Christian finishes 31-2.

STATE TOURNAMENT

Southern California Regional

First Round

DIVISION I

Mira Costa d. Esperanza, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18
A matchup with highly regarded Anaheim Esperanza wasn’t exactly what the Manhattan Beach Mira Costa girls’ volleyball team anticipated for the first round of the state tournament, but the way the Mustangs played Tuesday night, it didn’t really matter what team was on the other side of the net.

Top-seeded Mira Costa continued its dominant postseason run with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 sweep over visiting Esperanza in a Division I match.

Mira Costa, a 13-time section champion, has swept six consecutive matches this postseason and has allowed more than 19 points in a game only twice. The Mustangs will play host to Torrey Pines in a regional semifinal on Saturday night.

Esperanza (28-6) was the Southern Section Division I-AA runner-up, and coaches from Mira Costa and Esperanza were surprised that the Aztecs were seeded No. 8 behind City Section champion San Pedro, Division I-A runner-up Temecula Chaparral and San Diego Section runner-up Torrey Pines.

“We thought we’d get San Pedro,” said Mira Costa Coach DaeLea Aldrich, whose team won the Division I-A title. “But at this point in the season, you have to play everyone, so bring them on.”

The Mustangs (26-3) are peaking at the right time and appear unstoppable in a run for their first state title since 1989. Tuesday, they played with sharpness and efficiency. Mustang hitters put away nearly half of Taylor Carico’s sets.

Alix Klineman had 17 kills and only one error. Lauren Bledsoe had seven kills without an error. Add in 10 kills and 11 digs from Jessica Hardy and it’s easy to see that opposing coaches have their work cut out trying to stop the Mustangs.

“I’d have a hard time accepting it if you said they won’t win the state title,” Esperanza Coach Isaac Owens said. “My guess is that they’re going to get through it.”

Ashley Engle had 15 kills and Brittany Lowe added 13 for Esperanza, which led, 11-9, in the third game before Mira Costa went on a 12-5 run.

“This was the best match we’ve played all season,” said Carico, who finished with 32 assists. “It was a complete team effort. We’re all just coming together at the right time.”
