The question was, could they do it again?

The answer, for both Santa Barbara and Newport Harbor girls’ water polo teams, was a resounding yes.

Each team repeated one of its biggest victories of the season Saturday, and Santa Barbara’s on-court performance -- a 7-6 overtime decision over Newport Harbor -- gave the Dons the championship of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High.

The victory confirmed an 11-5 decision the Dons won over the Sailors in the semifinals of the Newport Harbor/Corona Del Mar tournament on Dec. 27.

To no one’s surprise, this meeting was much tougher.

“We could play them 100 times and we wouldn’t beat them 11-5 ever again,” Santa Barbara coach Mark Walsh said.

Santa Barbara (13-2), ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times and No. 1 in the Southern Section Division IV, rallied from a 4-2 first-quarter deficit, and the victory wasn’t secured until junior two-meter standout Kami Craig scored with 45 seconds left in the first half of a six-minute overtime period.

Craig, a transfer from Santa Ynez, finished with five goals and was named the tournament MVP. She shined despite being harrassed and wrestled constantly by Newport Harbor defenders Jessica Ball, Anne Belden and Carolyn Conway, and now has 52 goals this season.

Teammate Miranda Nichols, also an all-tournament selection, scored one goal that tied the game at 5-5 in the second quarter. She has 44 goals this year.

Newport Harbor (12-2), playing under the guidance of assistant coach Brian Melstrom after head coach Bill Barnett left earlier in the day to attend U.S. Water Polo’s annual convention in St. Louis, also lost junior Ashling Taylor early in the second half. She was ejected from the game following her third foul.

The Sailors, however, may have accomplished their main objective earlier in the day by advancing to the championship game with a 9-5 semifinal victory over Santa Ana Foothill.

The decision reiterated a 10-9 overtime victory the Sailors had earned over the Knights in a Sea View League game on Wednesday.

“A lot of people thought that the game might have been a fluke. We wanted to prove that it wasn’t,” said Newport Harbor junior Melissa Wheeler, who had one goal against Santa Barbara. “We are happy. We proved that we’re up there with Santa Barbara and that we were better than Foothill.”

Foothill (15-2), ranked No. 1 by The Times and in the Southern Section Division I entering the week, had appeared in the tournament championship game each of the past four years and had won the title the past three years in a row. The Knights, however, settled for third place this time with an 8-5 victory over Long Beach Wilson (13-4).

Third Place

Foothill 8, Long Beach Wilson 5
Kaitlin Prijatel, Grace Reynolds and Jillian Kraus each had two goals and Katy Krumpholz had six saves for Foothill (15-2) in the third place game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Foothill, the three-time defending tournament champion, settled for third place after dropping a 9-5 decision to Newport Harbor in the semifinals. The loss was the Knights’ second to the Sailors in four days.

Long Beach Wilson (13-4) got two goals from Lauren Silver and goalie Niki Lolis made 12 saves in a game that included 29 ejections, including 17, for Foothill.

Fifth Place

Corona del Mar 6, Los Alamitos 5 (OT)
Ashley Chandler scored in the closing seconds of sudden death overtime to lift Corona del Mar (8-7) to victory in the fifth place game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Katya Eadington finished with two goals, both scored in the fourth quarter, to help the Sea Kings erase a 4-2 third-quarter deficit.

Eadington’s first goal tied the game at 4-4 with 3:41 to play, and her second goal gave No. 6-ranked Corona del Mar a 5-4 lead with 1:44 left, but Jessica Lewis scored her fourth goal of the game for Los Alamitos (13-6) to force overtime.

Seventh Place

Upland 11, Riverside Poly 10 (OT)
Junior Jenna Schuster scored four goals, including the decisive one with five seconds left in overtime, as Upland edged Riverside Poly in the seventh place game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

The game was a matchup of last season’s Southern Section Division V finals. Upland defeated Riverside Poly, in that game, 11-8, and earlier this season downed the Bears, 16-11.

The Highlanders (15-2), ranked No. 7 in the Southland by The Times, also got three goals from Vanessa Lindsey and one goal and three assists from Bri Anderson. Anderson’s goal at the end of a breakaway tied the score at 9-9 with 3:51 left in the fourth quarter.

Riverside Poly (9-6), which led, 9-7, after the third quarters, got three goals from Monique Blanchard and Alison Riddle.

Championship Semifinals

Newport Harbor 9, Foothill 5
Senior two-meter player Jessica Ball scored six goals and played a strong defensive game for Newport Harbor, which advanced to the championship game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions for the second time in two years.

Jillian Kraus led Foothill (14-2), ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, with three goals and the Knights also got single goals from Grace Reynolds and Kaitlin Prijatel, but the Knights fell to Newport Harbor (12-1)for the second time in four days. Newport Harbor won, 10-9, in overtime in a Sea View League game Wdnesday at Newport harbor, The Times’ third-ranked team.

The game was tied 4-4 with 5:11 left in the third quarter, but Ball scored on an outside shot to give the Sailors the lead for good with just under two minutes left in the quarter.

Ball made the score 7-4 on a mid-range shot with 5:49 to play and Foothill never recovered. The Sailors made one of seven shot attempts in the last three minutes.

Santa Barbara 8, Long Beach Wilson 6
Miranda Nichols and Kami Craig each had four goals for Santa Barbara (12-2) as the No. 2 Dons advanced to the championship game of their own tournament for the third time in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High.

Santa Barbara took a 4-0 advantage in the first quarter, thanks largely to junior goalie Brittany May, who played a strong game and finished with eight saves. The Dons led 6-1 at halftime.

Long Beach Wilson (13-3) did not get on the scoreboard until a goal by Lauren Silver with 2:33 left in the first half. Silver finished with two goals to lead the Bruins, ranked No. 5 in The Times’ poll. Casie Mota also had two goals for Long Beach Wilson.

Monique Blanchard had four goals to lead Riverside Poly.The Sailors, ranked No. 3 in the Southland by The Times going into the week but coming off a victory Wednesday over No. 1-ranked Santa Ana Foothill, will face the Knights again in a semifinal match at 12:20 p.m. today at Santa Barbara High. Santa Barbara will meet Long Beach Wilson in the other semifinal at 11:20 a.m. at the same site.
