Garden Grove Pacifica 1, Carson 0 (8 innings)
It’s possible that the best team from the Southern Section faced the best from the City on Saturday at the Santa Ana Foothill Roundtable Invitational. The game didn’t disappoint, either, as Brittany Weil and Garden Grove Pacifica defeated Danira Iolamo and Carson, 1-0, in eight innings at Hillview School.
Pacifica (9-2), currently ranked No. 3 in the Southland -- but was No. 1 in the preseason -- began the eighth inning with a runner at second base per international tiebreaker rules.
After a two-strike sacrifice bunt by Taylor Froelich, freshman Noelle Micka’s bouncer deflected off Iolamo’s glove to the second baseman, allowing Camille Hundley to score. No. 14 Carson (11-2) had its chance in the bottom of the eighth, but Leilani Pallen overran third base and slipped while trying to get back on Paulina Nihipali’s bunt single that would have put runners at first and third with no outs.
Weil allowed three hits and struck out nine. Iolamo allowed four hits and struck out 10.
“I think we were a big surprise to a lot of people,” said Carson Coach Joe Sponsler. “There was a lot of talk about why we were even here, about why a City team was invited.”
Carson hit seven doubles in a 6-0 win over No. 21 Foothill earlier in the day.
“We really didn’t know what to expect,” Weil said. “They’ve got a really good pitcher and a lot of good hitters.”
Pacifica also defeated No. 20 Sun Valley Village Christian, the defending Division V champion, 6-0, as Monica Harrison had two RBIs and Crystal Vieyra one. In the other pool, No. 2 Norco and No. 12 Anaheim Canyon won both their pool games and face each other when the tournament concludes on Saturday.
