Senior John Foster, who will be swimming for California in the fall, set three of the four league records at the Century League finals meet. Foster swam 1:39.84 in the 200 freestyle, 4:33.14 in the 500 freestyle, and 46.83 to lead off the 400 freestyle relay for host Villa Park (9-2). As a team, Villa Park set a league record in the 200 freestyle with 1:27.44. Foster led that relay with 21.67.

Senior Jessica Cruzat, who will be swimming for University of the Pacifc next fall, won the 500 freestyle in 4:56.88 and the 100 backstoke in 57.00, setting a new league record in the 500 freestyle and missing the league record in the 100 backstroke by 0.5 of a second to lead host Villa Park (11-0). Teammate sophomore Lyndsay DePaul won the 200 individual relay in 2:03.93 and the 100 butterfly in 56:96, setting a league record in the 200 IM.

Rachel Rys won the 200 individual medley at 2:07.05 and the 100 butterfly at 57.39 seconds and was on the winning 200 medley relay team for Dos Pueblos. Dale Petty won the 50 freestyle at 24.54 seconds and was on the winning 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay teams for Buena. Teammate Amanda Graves won the 100 backstroke at 1:00.39 and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams. Haley Wilson won the 100 freestyle at 53.49 seconds for Santa Barbara.

La Reina swimmers won 10 of 11 events and followed Tuesday’s prelims by matching their seven-record output. Emily Bibb, Veronica Espino and Laura Decesare each won two events. Bibb set a new record in the 50 free of 24.17 breaking Tuesday’s mark of 24.18 and won the 100 Free in 52.91. DeCesare broke her Tuesday 200 Freestyle mark of 2:04.47 with a 2:01.33, and her 100 Breastroke mark of 1:13.94 on Tuesday with a 1:13.68. Veronica Espino broke the 200 IM league record 2:19.94 set by M. Lindsay of Crossroads in 2002 with a 2:19.93. Espino also won the 100 Fly in 1:03.27. Brianna Blanchard won the 500 Freestyle in 5:35.73. All three relays broke Tuesday’s records. The 200 medley relay reset the standard from 1:58.38 to 1:57.92, the 200 free relay improved the record from 1:44.97 to 1:44.43 and the 400 free relay record was reduced from 4:05.78 to 4:01.88.

Senior Danny Natalizio won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.29 and senior Evan Hsiao won the 100 breaststroke in 57.24 seconds to lead Irvine to its 10th consecutive Sea View League championship at Newport Harbor High.

The Vaqueros scored 453 1/2 points to outdistance second-place Foothill, which was second with 437 points despite setting meet records in one individual event and two relays.Foothill senior Daniel Novak, a double winner, set a meet record with a time of 49.92 seconds in the 100 butterfly, bettering a mark of 50.10 by Phillippe Demers of Santa Margarita in 1996. He also won the 100 backstroke in 51.88 seconds, missing the meet record in that event by seven one-hundredths of a second. Foothill’s 400 freestyle relay team of J.W. Krumpholz, Sandy Hohener, Ryan Cummins and Novak won in 3:13.57, breaking another record of 3:14.75, set in 1998 by Santa Margarita. The Knights’ other meet record came in the 200 medley relay, where they timed 1:38.82, lowering the previous standard of 1:38.89 by Irvine in 1999.

Krumpholz also won two individual events for Foothill, clocking 1:46.47 in the 200 free and timing 4:52.01 in the 500 free, where Natalizio was second in 4:53.15.

Irvine got a pair of second-place finishes by Jason Kim, in the 100 free (48.27) and the 200 free (1:46.49).

Freshman Tara Thomas won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.28 seconds and the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.69 as Foothill upset Irvine, the Southern Section Division I champion for the past seven years, in the Sea View League championships at Newport Harbor High on Friday, just days after losing to the Vaqueros in a dual meet.

Thomas also was part of Foothill’s 200 freestyle relay team that set a meet record with a time of 1:38.69, bettering a previous mark of 1:40.53 by Irvine in 1998.

Another Foothill freshman, Amber Oland, won the 100 backstroke with a sub-minute time of 59.02 seconds, and she came in second in the 200 individual medley at 2:12.94, finishing behind Jane Hwang, one of two double winners for defending league-champion Irvine.

Hwang, a sophomore, won the IM in 2:07.59 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.26. The Vaqueros also got two victories by senior Tanya Nielsen, who won both sprints. She went 24.31 in the 50 free and 53.19 in the 100 free.

Irvine had won the title nine of the past 10 years.

“It’s fine. We swam great,” said Irvine Coach Scott Hinman. “The thing that makes this palatable is that we didn’t lose the meet. Foothill won it. They swam great today.”

Devonie Migues won individual titles in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke as Santa Margarita, ranked No. 5 in the Southland by The Times, won the Serra League championship in the league finals Friday at Saddleback College.Migues, a sophomore, won the backstroke in 58.86 seconds and timed 1:08.33 in the breaststroke.The Eagles also won two of three relays and got a pair of second-place finishes by Mary Cousineau in the 50 freestyle (25.68) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.98). Boys

The long and the short of it was that San Clemente won its second South Coast League championship in three seasons, upsetting defending-champion Mission Viejo, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, in the league finals Friday at El Toro High.

Junior Scott Spansail won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:33.12 and and senior Grant Edgcomb won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.53 seconds as the Tritons, ranked No. 4 by The Times, outscored the second-place Diablos, 443-391. Trabuco Hills finished third overall.

Spansail and Edgcomb also were members of San Clemente’s 400 freestyle relay team that set a school record with a time of 3:11.95. Edgcomb led off the race, and was followed by senior Kyle Healy and junior Jeff Smith, while Spansail swam the anchor leg. San Clemente’s previous record was 3:12.72, set last year by an entirely different group of swimmers.

Mission Viejo junior Nick Divan, who clocked a 1:41.95 in the 200 free, was the only individual winner for the Diablos, who also were beaten out in all three relays. Scott Sorge posted a pair of third-place finishes, in the 50 free and the 100 backstroke.Healy won the 100 freestyle in 47.46 seconds for San Clemente, touching out teammate Edgcomb, who was second in 47.96, and third-place finisher Richard Hunter of Trabuco Hills, who timed 48.02. Spansail won the 500 over Dana Hills standout Peter Baer, who was second in 4:42.45.

Baer won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.06. Hunter won the 100 breaststroke title in 59.04.El Toro’s Brandon Pierson and Chris Allen each recorded a first- and second-place finish. Pierson won the 100 back, clocking 53.56, and was second in the 200 IM (1:56.49). Allen won the 100 butterfly in 52.30 and was the runner-up in the breast (1:00.02).

Mission Viejo senior Nicolette Teo defended her titles in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke while leading the Diablos to their first South Coast League championship since 2000 in league finals Friday at El Toro High.

Teo, the defending Southern Section Division I champion in the breaststroke, won that event with a time of 1:04.52. She won the 200 IM in 2:08.90.

Teo, who will swim at UCLA in the fall, was the was the only individual winner for Mission Viejo, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times. The Diablos, however, defeated three-time defending league champion and second-place finisher San Clemente, 487-417, with their depth. Mission Viejo won two of three relays and posted second-place finishes in seven races.The Diablos got a pair of second-place finishes from two sophomores, Anne Rodriguez and Kristen Yoon. Rodriguez was second to Teo in both the 200 IM, with a time of 2:12.25, and the breaststroke, where she went 1:09.52. Yoon placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.72 seconds and in the 200 free at 1:57.90.

San Clemente senior Lindsay Jones won the 100 free over Yoon with a time of 54.12. Jones also won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.39, beating out Mission Viejo’s Ashley Ladd (26.01). San Clemente also got a pair of third-place finishes, in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, from senior Stephanie Travis.Senior Megan Duggleby won the 100 butterfly (1:00.30) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.18) for El Toro, the host school. Capistrano Valley senior Erin Ketchum was the only other double winner, taking the 200 free (1:54.95) and the 500 free (5:07.02).

Byron Bailey won the 100 freestyle in 48.46 seconds for Los Alamitos’ only individual victory, but the Griffins used their depth to win the Sunset League title at league finals Friday at Golden West College in Huntington Beach.

Other than Bailey’s victory, the Griffins’ best performances were were three second-place finishes _ one each by David Mills in the 50 free, Jeff Tsim in the 100 butterfly and Tyler Slater in the 100 back _ and two third-places, including one by Bailey in the 50 free, where Los Alamitos had a 2-3-5 showing behind race winner Bryce Elser of Huntington Beach.Elser finished the 50 free in 21.30 and also won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.23.

Esperanza freshman Colin Gladys was the only other double winner in the meet, posting an automatic All-American time of 1:52.89 in the 200 individual medley as well as the 100 breast (58.43).

Marina’s Derick Willits won the 200 free in 1:48.45 and placed second in the 100 free (48.65).

Zelyne Russo and Amy Lim each won one individual event and were part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team for Marina and the Vikings won the Sunset League championship at finals Friday at Golden West College.

Russo won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:01.64 while Lim won the 50 free in 24.81 seconds. Russo swam the third leg of the 400 relay, while Lim was the anchor leg.

Marina, which also got individual victories by Laura Ferretti in the 100 backstroke (1:00.75) and Mallory Bojorquez in the 200 individual medley, won four of eight individual events. The quartet of Ferretti, Bojorquez, Russo and Lim placed second to Los Alamitos in the 200 medley relay.

Los Alamitos, which was led by sisters Jennifer and Amanda Traylor, won two of the three relays. The Griffins took the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.11 and 200 free relay in 1:41.82. Amanda Traylor, a freshman, won both distance events, taking the 200 free over Russo in 1:51.98 and the 500 free over Marina’s Karri Weisenthal in 4:56.98. Jennifer Traylor, a senior, won the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.13, beating out second-place finisher Lim (1:09.86).

Hart senior Kent Klawer broke his own Foothill League record to win the 200-yard individual medley and also recorded his season-best time in winning the 500 freestyle as the Indians clinched the league championship for the eighth consecutive season Thursday at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.

Klawer timed 1:55.29 in the 200 IM, lowering his own previous standard of 1:57.10 set last year. He won the 500 free with a time of 4:45.31.

His efforts helped Hart score a meet-high 515 points, followed by second-place Burbank with 322 and third-place Saugus with 276.

Besides his individual victories, Klawer also anchored Hart’s 400-free relay team that set a meet record in 3:19.49, beating a 1998 mark of 3:20.44. Klawer followed juniors Matt Gannon, Jeff Linn and Goran Bistric in the race.

Bistric, Linn, Gannon and Andrew Evans also benefited from a meet-record time of 1:41.44 that just beat Hart’s previous standard of 1:41.83.

Saugus freshman John Criste timed 57.55 in the 100 breaststroke to shatter the previous league mark of 1:01.95 set by Burbank Burroughs’ Greg Paggi in 1996 by nearly four seconds.

Criste also won the 100 butterfly with a time of , who led Saugus to a third-place finish behind with to shattered set a meet record in winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.03.

Sophomore Lizette Patterson broke her own Foothill League record in winning the 200 individual medley and also won the 100 backstroke to help Saugus end Hart’s 20-year streak of league championships.

Patterson won the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.47 and timed 1:01.00 in the backstroke as Saugus finished with 468 points to top second-place Hart, which got a victory by Shannon McCarthy in the 500 freestyle (5:15.10) and a meet-record time of 1:42.72 in the 200 free relay but scored 446 points. Hart had won the league title every year since 1983.

Valencia finished third with 305 points, followed by Burbank Burroughs, Canyon Country Canyon and Burbank.

Kalie Boggio won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.48 for Saugus’ only other individual victory, but the Centurions’ Melissa Bowers, Boggio, Christa Elias and Patterson set a meet-record with a time of 3:45.19 in the 400 free relay. The Centurions and second-place Hart (3:45.64) both finished under the previous standard of 3:46.64, set last year by Saugus.

Canyon Country Canyon’s Roxanne Camuso was the only individual double winner besides Patterson. She won the 100 free in 54.03 seconds and the 200 free in 1:55.70.
