ORANGE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Trabuco Hills High

The Mission Viejo boys’ team and the Santa Margarita girls’ squad do not have any elite performers on their rosters, but they had more than enough depth to win their respective team titles in the Orange County championships at Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills High on Saturday.

Mission Viejo, which scored points in 11 of the 16 events and had seven top-three finishes, totaled 70 points to win its second boys’ title in three years on a warm and breezy day. Cypress and Los Alamitos tied for second with 56 points, followed by defending champion Anaheim Esperanza with 44.

Senior Chase Frazier accounted for 14 of Mission Viejo’s points by finishing third in the 400 in a career-best 49.00 seconds, placing fourth in the 200 in a wind-aided 22.43 and running legs on Diablo teams that finished second in the 400 relay in 42.72 and second in the 1,600 relay in 3:23.07.

“This is huge, this is amazing,” Frazier said. “The whole team came through. A lot of people stepped up today, they did above what we’d thought they do. It’s just great that everyone could do their best on one day.”

Mission Viejo’s lone victory came from senior John Morse, who won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet 1 inch.

Santa Margarita totaled 63 points to win its second consecutive girls’ title and fourth in the last eight years. La Palma Kennedy finished second with 52 points, followed by Mission Viejo with 47 points and Dana Point Dana Hills with 43.

Santa Margarita scored points in 10 events and had eight top-three finishes.

The Eagles’ lone victory came from junior Lauren Collins, who won the 100-meter high hurdles in 14.59.

The top individual performances of the meet came from senior Chad Smith of Irvine University, who won the boys’ shotput with a yearly state-leading effort of 62-6¼, and senior Whitney Johnson of Mission Viejo, who won the girls’ pole vault at 12-8 to move to second on the yearly state list and to second on the all-time Orange County list in the event.

PENN RELAYS
At Philadelphia

Long Beach Poly’s girls’ team finished second in the 400-meter relay at the Penn Relay in Philadelphia but the Jackrabbits got what they came for--the national high school record.

Running a team of Shana Solomon, Jasmine Lee, Chanda Picott and Sholanda Solomon, Poly clocked 44.50 behind Hayes (Jamaica) Vere Tech’s 44.32, to break the old national high school mark of 44.63 set last year by Houston (Texas) Elsik in Albuquerque.

Poly anchor runner Shalonda Solomon, a 11.35/22.93 sprinter, found herself behind Vere Tech’s Simone Facey, and was unable to catch the Jamaican, who recently won her 100 and 200 national titles with times of 11.22 and 22.71.

The Jackrabbits came back to successfully defend their 1,600-meter relay title winning easily with a time of 3:36.85. The time is equal sixth on the all-time list.

Long Beach Poly, which earlier this year set the national high school record in the 800 relay and last year won the 1,600 relay at the Penn Relays with a national record, becomes the first school in history to simultaneous hold the national records in all three relays.

PENN RELAYS
At Philadelphia

Long Beach Poly sophomore Shana Woods won the long jump at 20 feet 461/47 inches for the second best mark in the nation this year and the Jackrabbits’ 400-meter and 1,600-meter girls’ relay teams were leading qualifiers Thursday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Poly is the defending champion in both relay events, but Jamaica, which has pretty much dominated the relays in recent years, appears intent on taking back the titles. In the 400 relay behind Poly’s 45.69 timing were six Jamaican teams led by Vere Tech and Holmwood Tech, each at 46.08. No other U.S. team made the final.

In the 1,600 relay, Poly led with a 3:39.98 and could be pushed to a national high school record in the final by Holmwood Tech, which qualified in 3:40.70. Poly also qualified for the final in the 3,200-meter relay.

California also had impressive performances from Escondido San Pasqual, which finished third to Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) in the distance medley relay, 11:45.62 to 11:58.62, and Talia Stewart of Union City Logan, who finished third to Nicole Leach of Philadelphia West Catholic in the 400 hurdles, 57.84 to 59.70.
