A Sub-Par Performance

Share

The Century League title race took an unexpected turn last week when previously undefeated Brea Olinda lost, 250-256, to Anaheim Canyon.

It was the first time Brea had failed to break 250 this season and narrowed the Wildcats’ league lead to one match over Canyon and Placentia El Dorado and two over Villa Park.

“It was a bad day for us,” Brea Coach Steve Hiskey said. “That was our worst score of the year.”

Jennifer Campbell is averaging 42, Yolanda Lin is averaging 46 and Jacquie Templin is averaging 48 for the Wildcats (13-1).

Brea, in its third year with a girls’ golf team, has yet to win a league title.

It has matches against El Dorado and Villa Park before an Oct. 30 rematch with Canyon in the season finale.

“Our league is tight,” Hiskey said. “There is no runaway favorite.”

Camarillo Surprises

Camarillo finished fourth in the Southern Section and third in the CIF-WSCGA finals last year but lost its two top players to graduation, so Coach Bill Dowden wasn’t expecting much this year.

The Scorpions have surprised him.

His players had early-season injury problems and conflicts with other commitments, but the team is finally intact and playing well. Led by Katrina Sutton and Gem Torres, Camarillo is averaging 213 over its last four matches.

“We’re a lot better than I thought we would be,” Dowden said.

Cochran to UCLA

Amie Cochran of West Torrance has committed to UCLA.

Cochran, ranked No. 11 in the nation by Golfweek Magazine, was an American Junior Golf Assn. All-American selection this year.

A two-time Times’ All-Star selection, Cochran had six top-10 finishes in national tournaments, including one title, and has been Southern Section individual runner-up three consecutive years.

On a Birdie Binge

After ending a string of four consecutive scores under par last week, Angela Park of Torrance started another. Her last two scores have been under par, giving her six sub-par scores in seven matches. She is averaging 34.14 during that stretch.
