Gun found in Culver City apartment hallway registered to rookie LAPD officer

The gun was found early Friday in the hallway of an apartment building in Culver City. A bullet was lodged in the wall.

After someone in the Canterbury Drive building called police, investigators responded and collected the weapon. They ran it through databases in hopes of finding its owner. Soon enough, police said, they got a hit.

The gun was registered to a rookie Los Angeles police officer.

No one was injured by the gunshot, but detectives are trying to determine who fired the gun and why. Culver City police have launched an investigation to determine whether any crime was committed, a department spokesman said.

“The criminal investigation would be looking at who did the shooting and the reason for it, and whether it’s criminal or just negligence,” Lt. Sam Agaiby said Tuesday. “The investigation hasn’t been completed yet.”

Meanwhile, the officer is the subject of two internal investigations within his own department, an LAPD spokesman said Tuesday. The officer was assigned to home following the incident, Cmdr. Andrew Smith said.

The officer was off duty at the time of the incident, Smith said.

Authorities have not released his name. Police have also not said whether the gun was the officer’s LAPD-issued weapon.
