Long Beach man released from jail two days before police shooting
A suspect who was shot and wounded by Long Beach police in the affluent Belmont Heights neighborhood last weekend was released from jail two days before the incident.
Greg Treadway, 49, of Long Beach was shot and wounded Saturday when he pointed a handgun at a police officer outside a home in the 200 block of Park Avenue, according to a police statement.
On Sept. 17, just four days before the shooting, Treadway’s ex-girlfriend called the police on him.
“The caller said their ex-boyfriend was driving drunk and violating a restraining order,” said Long Beach Police Sgt. Aaron Eaton. “Officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.
“He was booked for driving under the influence, hit and run, and violating a restraining order,” he added.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department inmate locator, Treadway was released Sept. 19. Two days later, Long Beach police officers responded to the home of the woman after Treadway allegedly showed up at the house again, violating the restraining order.
When the first officer arrived, he was approached by a woman who said a suspect was coming down the driveway armed with a handgun, according to the statement and Eaton.
“The suspect pointed the handgun at the officer. When the suspect failed to comply with the officer’s commands, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the statement read.
Authorities later said that Treadway broke into a garage, where he retrieved the handgun and then made his way to the front of the house, where his ex-girlfriend and another woman were standing and where he confronted police officers.
Treadway was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault against a police officer with a firearm, burglary and violation of a restraining order.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as it does with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death.
