Re “Carmen Basilio: Middleweight boxing champion beat Robinson,” Obituary, Nov. 9
So sorry to learn of Carmen Basilio’s passing. He was a true sportsman and gentleman.
Thanks for publishing a real sports photo. Basilio and Sugar Ray in the middle of the ring — it doesn’t get any better than that. The skill, effort and dedication to the craft is palpable.
Over the last few years, so many “sports” photos depict “celebrations” and other non-athletic activities. And this one was doubly sweet for me, because my dad and I would never miss the TV fights, with the likes of Kid Gavilan, Gene Fulmer, Art Aragon and, of course, Gasper Ortega. It really took me back. Thanks again.
