Breakers start strong

The Laguna Beach High boys’ tennis team took its record to 3-0 in the first few weeks of the season by defeating visiting JSerra Tuesday, 11-7, in a nonleague match.

Sweeping for the Breakers was the doubles team of Ethan Gee and Hayden Seitz who posted wins of 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 1 line. Nick Besso and Morgan Lebby, at No. 3 doubles, won the two sets they played (6-3, 7-5).

In singles for the Breakers, No. 1 Ryan Gee (5-7, 6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 Charles Keller (2-6, 6-0, 6-0) both won two of three sets.

“It’s the best match that we’ve had thus far, and it’s shown the positive progression of our doubles teams,” Coach Don Davis said. “Tristan Krogius has been injured, but he is slowly making his way back to full-time play.”

The Breakers took on Trabuco Hills in a nonleague match Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Next week, the Breakers travel Tuesday for a 3 p.m. nonleague match at Huntington Beach, and begin their title defense in the Orange Coast League at 3:15 p.m. Thursday when they play host to Estancia.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers, ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 2, hosted San Clemente, the No. 8–ranked team in Division 1, Tuesday at Dugger Gym. The visiting Tritons improved to 2-1 by fending off the Breakers to claim a 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16 victory.

Senior middle blocker Tyler Alter had 20 kills, junior outside hitter Pete Obradovich 16 kills and nine digs, junior libero Cole Paxson 18 digs, junior middle blocker Barry Greenough eight kills, and senior setter Isaac Wulff 36 assists.

The Breakers, who dropped their season opener last week to Newport Harbor, ranked sixth this week in Division 1, fell to 0-2.

The Breakers played Thursday at Santa Margarita. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Next week, the Breakers travel Wednesday for a 5:15 p.m. nonleague game at Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings are ranked second in Division 1.

Swimming

The Laguna girls’ and boys’ teams swam a nonleague meet Tuesday at El Toro, and came away with split results. The girls’ team defeated the Diablos, 166-119 while the boys’ team was outscored, 184-100.

The Laguna girls won two relays (200 medley relay, 400 free relay), took the top three spots in two events (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, both won by Kasey Karkosa), and Claire Kelly took first place in both of her two individual events (200 freestyle, 500 free with her first CIF consideration time).

“The varsity girls swam really strong yesterday,” co-head Coach Beth Weber said. “It’s an exciting time for the girls this season as they are just getting started and will only get faster from here.”

Girls’ top finishes Tuesday: 200 Medley Relay: Harper Dix, Kasey Karkoska, Sophie Leggett, Bella Baldridge (1:57.76, first-place, CIF consideration time); 400 Free Relay: Kasey Karkoska, Sophie Leggett, Bella Baldridge, Harper Dix (3:49.26, first, CIF consideration time); 200 free: Claire Kelly (2:06.76, first); 500 free: Claire Kelly (5:28.83, first, CIF consideration time); 200 IM: Kasey Karkoska (2:13.45, first, CIF consideration time), Abby Cohn (2:28,65, second), Keira Dailey (2:28.77, third); 100 backstroke: Kasey Karkoska (1:00.77, first, CIF consideration time), Harper Dix (1:02.51, second, CIF consideration time), Carolann Strauss-Hook (1:07.87, third).

In the varsity boys’ competition, Max Morgan won the 200 IM with a new CIF consideration time of 2:04.30, and Cameron Karkoska swam to first-place finishes in both of his two individual events in CIF automatic times (50 free, 21.58; 100 breaststroke, 1:00.45).

“The varsity boys were up against a fast El Toro group and came up short in the overall points, but I think we swam well for this early season meet,” Weber said. “We will only get faster from here and are looking to put together some fast relays for the upcoming Mission Viejo Invitational (March 19).”

Track and Field

The Breakers’ boys’ and girls’ teams hosted El Dorado March 3 in their first dual meet of the season. In the girls’ varsity competition, El Dorado had 67 points to the Breakers’ 50. In the boys’ competition, the Golden Hawks outscored the Breakers, 89-24.

In the girls’ varsity competition, two Breakers, Blake Turner (long jump, triple jump) and Jackie Cenan (shotput, discus throw) won two individual events, and Charlie Warner (110 meter hurdles, high jump) was a double-individual event winner in boys’ varsity. Laura Bianchi (long jump, triple jump) won two individual events in the girls’ Open competition.

“We had a great opening meet [with] a lot of good marks to start the season,” girls’ Coach Steve Lalim said.

Boys’ Golf

In a nonleague match March 3 at Aliso Viejo Country Club, the Breakers fell to Dana Hills, 188-211.

“As a team, we are excited about the improvements that we have made from our match earlier in the week (a 185-223 March 1 loss to Dana Hills).

The Breakers took on Aliso Niguel in a nonleague match Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time. They again face the Wolverines at 2:30 p.m. next Monday at Ben Brown’s Golf Course, and begin their bid for a repeat Orange Coast League championship when they start league play with a 2:30 p.m. league match against Costa Mesa at Ben Brown’s. They travel Thursday for a 2:30 p.m. league contest against Estancia at Mesa Verde Country Club.
