Having had a near-two week break from match action, the Laguna Beach High boys’ tennis team returned to the courts Tuesday and Wednesday for nonleague competition, and the Breakers rolled to big victories.

Their week started with a 16-2 home win Tuesday over El Toro. Sweeps in singles play were recorded by Ryan Gee (6-2, 6-1, 6-0), Charles Keller (6-3, 6-2, 6-0) and Tristan Krogius (6-2, 6-1, 6-0). In doubles, No. 1 team Sterling Bowen/Nick Besso (6-0, 6-0, 6-3) and Ethan Gee/Hayden Seitz (6-2, 6-0, 6-2) swept.

“The boys were a little rusty at the start, but quickly settled down and played well,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said of his team’s first match since March 24.

On Wednesday at Mission Viejo, the Breakers handled the Diablos in an 18-0 shutout. In the sweep, the doubles team of Mason Lebby/Taylor Sokolovich scored a 6-4 win over a strong No. 1 Diablos doubles team of Trevor Davis/Ben Peng.

“We were a bit rusty [Tuesday against El Toro] but having played a competitive match, the team was especially sharp [Wednesday] and it showed in everyone’s results,” Davis said.

The win moved Laguna, the No. 2-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 4, to 9-2 overall.

The Breakers return to Orange Coast League play next week. They play host to Costa Mesa at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday and they’ll travel to face Godinez at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at McFadden Middle School in Santa Ana.

Laguna is 3-0 in league play and seeking another OCL title as the regular season moves into its final month.

“Everyone is improving, especially the doubles team of Sterling Bowen and Nick Besso who have had enough time to gel as a team,” Davis said. “We’re still trying to make a big push and improve before the end of league and the start of CIF.”
