Laguna league champ in girls’ tennis

A regular-season showdown between two of the top-ranked girls’ tennis teams in CIF Southern Section Division 2 was played Monday, and it was host and third-ranked Sage Hill which got the victory by slipping past fifth-ranked Laguna Beach, 10-8, at The Tennis Club of Newport Beach.

In singles for the Breakers, Kelly Keller swept at the No. 1 line, winning, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 1 doubles teams of Natasha Keces/Ashley Fair also won by sweep, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

Laguna’s other points were picked up by No. 2 singles Ashley Shelton and No. 2 doubles team of Malia Helms/Summer Clawson.

In an Orange Coast League match Oct. 15, the Breakers cruised past visiting Calvary Chapel, 16-2, to clinch the league championship. They received a sweep at No. 2 singles from Shelton (6-1, 6-0) and Danielle Conklin (6-3), and a clean sweep in doubles from No. 1 teams Keces/Fair (6-0, 6-0) and Brigette Thomas/Nicole Davidson (6-4), No. 2 teams of Helms/Jessa Chaney (6-1, 6-1) and Taylor Corrigan/Joie Selin (6-2), and No. 3 team of Chloe Stuart/Lena Gleizer (6-2, 6-0, 6-0).

Laguna concluded its league and regular season with matches against Estancia Tuesday and Saddleback Thursday. Scores weren’t available at press time.

The Breakers will compete next Wednesday (2 p.m.) and Thursday (3 p.m.) at the OCL prelims and finals tournament at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Boys’ Water Polo

The Breakers won their 10th game of the season Saturday by defeating visiting Los Alamitos, 11-6, in nonleague play.

Jakob Colladay tied for game-high scoring honors with five goals to go with two assists and five steals. Jeff Rubino scored four goals, Julian Bridy scored twice, Judge Washer had four assists, and Gordon Pike recorded 11 saves as Laguna, ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 3, improved to 10-9 overall.

The Breakers took on Montebello in a nonleague game Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time. They begin play Friday at the North/South Challenge varsity tournament and play at noon at Atherton Sacred Heart.

Cross-Country

The Breakers were scheduled to travel to Clovis Oct. 16 for the Rough Rider Invitational, but mudslides along Interstates 5 and 58, prevented them from making the trip. Instead, the boys’ and girls’ teams competed at the OC Championships (Division 2).

Girls’ Volleyball

The Breakers, ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 2AA, took on Costa Mesa Tuesday and Saddleback Thursday in league play. Results weren’t available at press time.

Next week, the Breakers play 5:30 p.m. league matches at Estancia Tuesday, and Calvary Chapel Thursday.

Boys’ Sand Volleyball

In a rematch of last year’s title game, Laguna Beach (4-1) defeated Huntington Beach, 4-2, in an Orange County League finale at Grant Street in Newport Beach.

The Breakers scored their points in four, two-man matches. The No. 1 team of Cole Paxson/Isaac Wulff (22-20, 21-13), No. 2 Pete Obradovich/Tyler Jackson (21-16, 21-16), No. 4 Liam Christiansen/Enzo Sadler ( 21-4, 21-6), and No. 5 Luke Jamison/Guy Thomas (21-6, 21-18) picked up victories.

The Breakers, 4-1 in league, are competing this week in postseason play.
