Banner season for Breakers

It’s been a banner season for the Laguna Beach High girls’ golf team, and that season continues.

The Breakers concluded a perfect run through Orange Coast League match play to win a championship, then had five team members earn all-league status, including the league MVP, and now, is about to embark upon CIF Southern Section team playoff action.

In an OCL Finals tournament (nine holes on two days) that concluded Oct. 19 at Mesa Linda Golf Course at Costa Mesa Country Club, Laguna sophomore BellaRose Robinson won the tournament title with a two-day total score of 121. Teammate Hailey McCullough a senior, also earned first-team all-league honors with a 145 score and a sixth-place finish.

There was a two-way tie for seventh and ninth places, both ties involving Laguna players. Senior Murphy Thompson and Estancia junior Violet Amrine both had a 146 score, and Murphy took eighth-place after Amrine won a card-off (best score, back nine holes). Laguna freshman Haley Rovner and Calvary Chapel junior Maddie Njust both had a 147 score, and Rovner claimed ninth place by winning a card-off.

Thompson, Rovner and another Laguna freshman, Sarah Hollinshead (11th place, 151 score), were second-team all-league.

The top four league players advanced to compete Monday at the CIF Individuals tournament at Dad Miller Golf Course (par 71) in Anaheim. Robinson shot a 93 score. The cut to advance to the next round was 76. No OCL golfer advanced.

Laguna closed out OCL match play Oct. 21 hosting the final league cluster match at Ben Brown’s Golf Course (par 32) in Laguna Beach. The Breakers won all three matches, defeating Costa Mesa (233-276), Calvary Chapel (233-236), and Estancia (233-250).

The Breakers went 12-0 against league competition and won the league title by six matches over Calvary Chapel and Estancia both of whom finished 6-6.

Laguna has won 36 consecutive league matches and has gone undefeated in league play three consecutive years.

The Breakers will compete Monday at CIF Team Regionals (Southern Division) at Lakewood Country Club in Long Beach.

Boys’ Water Polo

The Breakers, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, continued their stranglehold on the Orange Coast League championship by winning another title. In a league finale Wednesday at the Laguna pool, the Breakers stormed to a 17-1 halftime lead on Saddleback and ended up with a 20-3 victory.

Twelve Breakers scored led by Jakob Colladay’s four goals. Jeff Rubino and Larsen McCarroll both scored three goals, and Joe Laptin and Luke Winter both scored twice. Gordon Pike had seven saves.

Laguna finished 4-0 in league play.

In a nonleague game Monday, Laguna took care of visiting Trabuco Hills, 10-4. Colladay scored five goals and Rubino three, and Pike had seven saves. The Breakers took a 7-2 lead at the half.

The Breakers were coming off a four-game swing against Northern California schools at the North/South Challenge which started Oct. 23 and concluded Saturday. They dropped games to Sacred Heart Prep (8-6), Davis (10-6) and St. Francis (7-6), and defeated Menlo Atherton (7-6).

In a key CIF-SS Division 3 matchup Oct. 21 at Laguna, the Breakers held on for a 15-14 victory over fifth-ranked Montebello. Rubino and Sebastian Jacobs both scored four goals, Colladay scored three goals, Camden Benson had three assists, and Pike had seven saves.

The Breakers are on the road twice next week to conclude regular-season play. They play 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Capistrano Valley, the No. 3 team in CIF-SS Division 3, and a 4 p.m. game at Newport Harbor, the seventh-ranked team in Division 1.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Breakers ran their league victory streak to 98 consecutive matches by sweeping host Estancia Tuesday, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14. Opposite Jamie Robbins had 10 kills and six digs, middle blocker Cameron Dorn eight kills and six digs, outside hitter Alexandra McKeown nine kills, outside hitter Katelyn Carballo seven kills and eight digs, and setter Aspen Rocha 31 assists.

Laguna, which clinched at least a share of the Orange Coast League championship with the win, improved to 8-0 in league and 16-10 overall.

The Breakers, now 50-0 all-time (best-of-five sets), are ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 2AA.

In a previous league match Oct. 22, the Breakers cruised at Saddleback, 25-8, 35-8, 25-11. Dorn had 12 kills, outside hitter Sage Patchell nine kills, middle blocker Aleya Post eight kills, libero Katie Hayden nine digs, and Rocha 26 assists and eight digs.

Laguna took on second-place Calvary Chapel (6-2) Thursday. The final score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers host their alumni game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Dugger Gym, close out their league schedule with a 5:30 p.m. home match Tuesday against Godinez, and end regular-season play Thursday hosting Sage Hill at 5:15 p.m.

Girls’ Tennis

In their final Orange Coast League match of the season, the Breakers again concluded a 10-0 league campaign and closed out another championship with an 18-0 sweep of host Saddleback Oct. 22.

In a league match Oct. 20, Laguna downed host Estancia, 13-5 behind a clean sweep in doubles play.

The victory over Estancia was the 100th consecutive league win (dating to a Sept. 2005 loss at Corona del Mar). The Breakers have never lost an Orange Coast League match.

At No. 1 doubles, Natasha Keces/Ashley Fair won their set (6-0) and the team of Megan Mindte/Nicole Davidson won two sets (6-3, 6-0). At No. 2, Malia Helms/Iman Berri won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, and the No. 3 teams of Chloe Stuart/Lina Glezer won twice (6-1, 6-0) and Joie Selin/Brigette Thomas won once (6-0).

In singles, No. 1 Ashley Shelton won her two sets (6-3, 6-1).

The Breakers competed Wednesday and Thursday at the OCL prelims and finals tournaments. Results weren’t available at press time.

The CIF-SS team playoffs start Wednesday.

Cross-Country

The Breakers will run at the Orange Coast League finals Wednesday at Irvine Regional Park.

Boys’ Sand Volleyball

Laguna’s bid to repeat as champion of the Orange County Boys’ Sand Volleyball League was denied by Saddleback Valley Christian which defeated the Breakers, 4.5-2.0, in the title match Wednesday at Grant Street Courts in Newport Beach.

Points for the Breakers, who finished the season 7-2, came from the No. 3 team of Josh McManus/Ayrton Garcia (21-14, 21-12 win), and No. 5 team of George Knapp/Tyler Jackson (19-21, 21-15, 15-13 win).

In the four-man match, Saddleback Valley Christian rallied to edge the Laguna foursome of Pete Obradovich, Isaac Wulff, Sam Burgi and Cole Paxson, 26-24, to capture the team title.

The Breakers had advanced to league finals for the second straight year by defeating both Edison (6.5-0) and San Clemente (5.0-1.5), and Grant Street courts in Newport Beach.

Laguna results against San Clemente: No. 1 Wulff/Paxson won, 21-18, 21-9; No. 2 Obradovich/Burgi won, 21-19, 14-21, 15-9; No. 3 McManus/Garcia won, 21-16, 21-16; No. 4 Christiansen/Sadler won, 21-8, 21-15; No. 5 Knapp/Jackson won, 21-2, 19-21, 21-19; Laguna 4-man (Wulff, Paxson, Burgi, Obradovich) lost, 25-13.

Laguna fell to Dana Hills in an Oct. 22 competition, but several Breakers turned in impressive performances at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point. Kayla Coscino kept up her winning ways in Girls’ Shortboard, and Noah North and Jeremy Shutts won their heats in Boys’ Shortboard.

Other key heat finishes for the Breakers: Zach Levine (Boys’ Shortboard, second); Jake Levine (Boys’ Shortboard, third); Trey Lockhart (Boys’ Shortboard, fourth); Dante Madrigal (Boys’ Shortboard, fourth); Lola Fisher (Girls’ Longboard, third); Megan Mathews (Girls’ Longboard, fourth; Jameson Roller (Boys’ Longboard, third); Ryan Meisberger (Boys’ Longboard, fourth); Cole Fink (Boys’ Bodyboard, fourth).

In a previous competition, Laguna scored a home win over visiting Newport Harbor at Thalia Street. The 103-65 final was the widest margin of victory of the season for the Breakers. Noah North, Jake Levine, Travis Booth and Liam McCue, collected heat wins in Boys’ Shortboard, Kayla Coscino scored a heat win in Girls’ Shortboard and had a second-place heat finish in Girls’ Longboard, and Lola Fisher won her Girls’ Longboard heat.
