All-CIF players shine in spotlight

Several local athletes have earned All-CIF Southern Section honors in boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ soccer, and girls’ water polo.

The All CIF Southern Section/Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Assn. revealed its 2015-16 selections Monday, and four local players received honors. In girls’ basketball, Huntington Beach junior forward Frankie Wade-Sanchez was named to the Division 1A First Team. In boys’ basketball, Edison junior guards Randall Walker and Nate Matthews were named to the Division 2AA First Team, and Ocean View senior Zamir Kelly was named to the Division 3A First Team.

For the 2015-16 All-CIF-SS selections presented by the LA84 Foundation, Huntington Beach senior forward Darcy Weiser was named to the Division 1 First Team, and Ocean View senior goalie Emma Malsy was named to the Division 5 First Team.

Ocean View seniors Shannon Graham and Elena Isogawa were named to the 2015-16 All-CIF-SS (LA84 Foundation, as selected by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches’ Assn.) Division 6 First Team.

Boys’ Volleyball

Corona del Mar claimed the Division 1 title by defeating Los Alamitos (25-20, 19-25, 15-9), and Lakewood won the Division 2 title by defeating Crean Lutheran (28-26, 25-23), Monday on the final day of the three-day Orange County Championships at Edison.

Edison reached the Division 1 semifinals where the Chargers were defeated (2-0) by Sunset League rival Los Alamitos. The Chargers went 4-1 at the tourney and finished in third place, scoring wins over Sunset foe Newport Harbor, Tesoro (twice) and Foothill.

Senior Tyler Power and junior Trent Williams of the Chargers made the all-tournament team.

“We were down in a few games throughout the weekend,” Edison Coach Matt Skolnik said of his team which is 7-4 overall. “We didn’t shower away from a challenge and stepped up our play. Every player stepped up and took turns making big plays at big moments and that really propelled us through the weekend.”

The Sunset League season starts at 5:45 p.m. Friday, and Edison and Los Alamitos will square off again when the Chargers host the Griffins. The other two matches pits defending league and CIF-SS Division 1 champion and top-ranked Huntington Beach against Marina, and Fountain Valley travels to face Newport Harbor.

Ocean View, which opened its Golden West League schedule Wednesday against Santa Ana (the score wasn’t available at press time), hosts Orange in a 4:30 p.m. league match Friday.
