Baseball: Banning knocks off Chatsworth, 1-0

For the second consecutive week, junior pitcher Justin Yanez of Banning has defeated a City Section power. Last week, it was San Fernando, 3-2. On Tuesday, Yanez allowed one hit in a 1-0 victory over Chatsworth and pitcher Josh Garcia.

Banning (6-2) scored the only run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice following a walk, a sacrifice and an error. Garcia struck out eight, walked two and allowed only one hit. Chatsworth dropped to 9-2-1.

It took 15 innings, but Long Beach Wilson outlasted Long Beach Jordan, 4-3, in a Moore League game. Tyler Radcliffe threw nine shutout innings, striking out 10 and allowing four hits for Wilson. Josh Goldberg had three hits and two RBIs.

San Fernando rallied for three runs in bottom of the seventh to defeat Granada Hills Kennedy, 5-4, in a Valley Mission League opener. Kai Gomez had an RBI double. With the bases loaded, Marquis Jackson hit a ground ball to the second baseman that was bobbled while trying to turn it into a double play. Gomez ended up scoring the winning run from second.

In the Mission League, Calvin Estrada delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give Crespi a 4-3 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Armett Johnson and Matt Cassin each had two hits. Alemany defeated St. Francis, 9-0. Brandon Ponticelli (4-0) struck out seven in six innings. Alex Mckenna had a two-run home run. Adam Bedrossian had three RBIs.

Marco Briones threw one-hitter and struck out nine in Alhambra’s 4-0 victory over Montebello. Gahr defeated Gardena Serra, 11-3.

Kurt Johnson, Bryan Duda, Garrett Brossard and Cory Baxter combined for 12 strikeouts in Royal’s 2-1, eight-inning win over Santa Fe. Jake Zahorik drove in the go-ahead run. In the second game, Royal won, 5-3. Brandon Grimes had three hits and Trent Maye contributed two doubles.

Daniel Griese had an RBI single in the ninth inning to give Beckman a 3-2 win over Irvine.

Glendora defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 3-2, behind Kale Morton, who struck out 10.

Joseph Romero struck out 14 in Oxnard’s 2-1 win over Channel Islands.

Esperanza scored a run in the eighth inning to defeat Anaheim Canyon, 4-3. Blake Schriever struck out nine in eight innings. Griffin Barnes had two hits.

Sophomore Zack Noll allowed five hits in a complete game to lead Great Oak past Vista Murrieta, 5-3, in the Southwestern League.

Cameron Bishop struck out 10 in Brea’s 2-0 win over El Modena.

In Arizona, Harvard-Westlake defeated Mountain Point, 5-0. Logan Simon threw a complete game, allowing two hits while striking out six. Ezra Steinberg went three for four. Cameron Deere had two RBIs.

Simi Valley defeated Pueblos West, 13-5. Matt Campbell had three RBIs and Turner Nelson had three hits.

Elijah Skipps had two hits and two RBIs in Cypress’ 7-1 win over Buena Park Kennedy.

Bryce Morison hit a two-run home run in Santa Barbara’s 12-2 win over Boulder Creek.

Max Green had three hits and four RBIs in Peninsula’s 12-3 win over Burroughs.
