Baseball: Game of the year in fall ball is set for Saturday

Break out the sunflower seeds, dust off the lawn chair and get ready for the game of the year in fall baseball.
On Saturday at 10 a.m. at O’Malley Family Field in Encino, defending Southern Section Division I champion Harvard-Westiake is playing Huntington Beach, the team that returns nine starters from the squad that knocked off top-seeded Mater Dei last season.
“It should be a good one,” Huntington Beach Coach Benji Medure said.
Huntington Beach has six Division I commits, led by junior infielder Logan Pouelsen and freshman catcher Hagen Danner, both UCLA commits.
Harvard-Westlake is led by North Carolina signee Jack Flaherty, a pitcher-infielder. Flaherty won’t pitch on Saturday but will hit. The Wolverines will be trying out a group of pitchers vying for the No. 2 spot in the rotation: seniors Logan Simon and Michael Vokulich, juniors Matt Beyer, Jackson Grayson and Tom Fuller and sophomores Jake Suddleson and Paul Giacomazzi.
The two teams played each other last week, with lots of hitting. It’s the rematch.
Now, if only someone could start cooking some hot dogs . . .
There’s another outstanding fall game on Saturday. Fountain Valley is hosting Loyola in a 10 a.m. start.
