Baseball: No. 1 JSerra splits doubleheader with Huntington Beach

With its Trinity League opener against St. John Bosco set for Wednesday at Angel Stadium, No. 1-ranked JSerra didn’t lose focus and ended up with a split of its doubleheader on Monday against preseason No. 1 Huntington Beach.

In the first game, Colin Townsend had two hits and two RBIs in JSerra’s 9-6 win over Huntington Beach.

In the second game, Huntington Beach rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Lions, 9-8. Dominic Abbadessa had three hits and two RBIs. Hagen Danner came on in the seventh to get the save. Lyle Lin had two RBIs for JSerra and Royce Lewis and Chase Strumpf had two hits each.

Cleveland 3, North Hollywood 2: The Cavaliers (9-1) got the win in eight innings. Chris Gonzalez had two hits, Anthony Rivera allowed six hits in seven innings and Sam Villa, on his 17touh birthday, got the game-winning hit. Leo Ortega struck out five in seven innings for North Hollywood.

It was the fourth game for Cleveland without Coach Scott Drootin, who is on indefinite suspenson pending outcome of an LAUSD investigation into a practice incident, Athletic Director Greg Venger said.

Moorpark 5, Highland 0: Five Moorpark pitchers combined on a two-hitter for the staff’s fourth shutout this season. TJ Foreman, Matt Page and Jimmy Friery each had two hits.

Orange Lutheran 5, West Ranch 0: Jason Farese, Cole Spear and Chris Burica combined for the shutout. Spear struck out three in two innings. Austin Mowery had two hits.

Long Beach Poly 4-2, Downey 3-1: Gaven Palagonia’s RBI double in the ninth gave the Jackrabbits a vcitory in the first game. Mike Mauai had a two-run single in the second game.

Taft 3, Verdugo Hills 1: Lee Brandzal hit a home run, Zach Roth went three for three and Alex Davis threw 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Clay Suggs struck out six in seven innings for Verdugo Hills and Charlie Rocca hit a home run.

Los Alamitos 2, Bishop Amat 0: Josh Agnew threw six shutout innings for Los Alamitos. Dante Castillo and Ulrick Sanglay had two hits apiece for Bishop Amat.

Granada Hills 3, Palisades 2: Tyler Yeh had three hits for Palisades. Dalton Lock threw four scoreless innings for Granada Hills.
