Baseball: Orange Lutheran’s Toby Dunlap throws perfect game

Toby Dunlap of Orange Lutheran sure knows how to prove he deserves a college baseball scholarship. Just a day after committing to Washington, Dunlap threw a perfect game on Wednesday in the Lancers’ 7-0 Southern Section Division 1 wild-card victory over Newport Harbor.

“He was phenomenal,” said Coach Eric Borba of the 6-foot-6 senior who struck out two and retired all 21 batters with the help of a stellar defense, led by shortstop Josh Morgan, who had nine assists and added two hits.

Orange Lutheran moves on to play Newhall Hart on Friday.

Mater Dei defeated Valley View, 7-4. Freshman Nick Pratto struck out seven in four innings. Josh Blank had a two-run double. The Monarchs play Capistrano Valley on Friday.

Blake Rutherford hit a two-run home run and Darren Kriz and Dallas Tessar each had two hits to back the solid pitching of Dylan Suppan in Chaminade’s 5-0 win over West Ranch.

Cristian Montes delivered a two-run double during a four-run fifth inning to help Alemany rally from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Saugus, 5-4. Three Mission League teams won their wild-card games, sending five into the first-round on Friday.

Mission Viejo defeated El Dorado, 2-1, behind pitcher Patrick Sandoval. Matt Ryhlick delivered the game-winning hit in the seventh.

Noah Kronfly (8-1) threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, in Edison’s 4-3 win over Tesoro. Michael Mahoney got his fifth save.

Lakewood defeated Newbury Park, 1-0, in nine innings. Ryan Hare threw all nine innings for Lakewood, striking out 10. Caleb Lew broke the 0-0 deadlock with an RBI single. Thomas Ponticelli threw all nine innings for the Panthers.

Trabuco Hills defeated Royal, 5-4. John Glenn had a home run in Thousand Oaks’ 4-3 win over Riverside King.

Corona defeated Arlington, 6-0. Seth Kaneen struck out 11.
