Boys’ basketball: South Gate sophomore David Mixon comes through

Two games into the basketball season, South Gate is estabilishing itself as the favorite to win City Section Division II behind sophomore David Mixon.
The Rams improved to 2-0 in the St. Monica tournament, knocking off Birmingham, 60-57. Mixon scored 22 points and junior Julio Maldonado had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Maldonado made the game-winning layup with 11 seconds left. The Rams defeated Hamilton on Monday.
Also in the St. Monica tournament, La Salle defeated University, 66-51. Jaice Gardner scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds. Crossroads defeated Santa Monica, 62-60. Jonah Mathews had 28 points for Santa Monica.
In the El Segundo tournament, Loyola defeated Rancho Dominguez, 93-37. Ben Grundy scored 22 points. Fairfax defeated View Park, 81-45. Babacar Thiombane had 25 points. Antoine Monroe, Jamal Hartwell and Jeremy Hamilton added 11 points apiece.
In the Maranatha tournament, Westlake defeated Highland, 69-66. Adam Hess had 21 points and Drew Brackens 18. Cantwell-Sacred Heart defeated Palisades, 75-45. Jacob Davison had 24 points. Maranatha defeated Firebaugh, 70-28. Trevor Stanback had 17 points and 20 rebounds. Muir defeated Oaks Christian, 64-62. Hunter Woods had 30 points for Muir.
In the Burbank tournament, Isaac Etter had 26 points and Josh Caston 20 in Village Christian’s 92-35 win over Quartz Hill.
In the Westchester tournament, JW North defeated Roybal, 91-31. Campbell Hall defeated Peninsula, 48-41. Jordan Cohen had 25 points. St. Bernard defeated Bakersfield, 57-45.
La Mirada defeated Paramount, 87-69. Ian Carter had 25 points. Jonathan Guzman led Paramount with 26 points.
Villa Park (2-0) defeated Bassett, 81-36. Evan Battey had 23 points and 15 rebounds. Orange Lutheran defeated Century, 82-8. The Lancers didn’t give up a single point in the second half.
In the Corona Centennial tournament, Foothills Christian defeated Etiwanda, 73-44. UCLA-bound TJ Leaf had 34 points. Centennial defeated Rancho Christian, 82-52. Centennial plays Foothills Christian on Wednesday and Chino Hills faces Eastvale Roosevelt. Semaj Shepheard scored 29 points in Cathedral’s 74-35 win over Rialto. Milan Acquaah added 19 points.
Reseda Cleveland improved to 3-0 with a 88-54 win over Sherman Oaks CES. Roman Morales had 24 points and Wayne Currie 23 points.
Dante Fregoso scored 25 points in Flintridge Prep’s 65-33 win over St. Pius X-St. Matthias.
Thomas Franks had 23 points in St. Bonaventure’s 66-53 win over Malibu.
Beverly Hills defeated Crenshaw, 65-51. Tarbut V’Torah (2-0) defeated Calvary Chapel, 61-38. Brandon Averitt had 20 points and Isaac Abecassis added 18.
San Marino defeated AGBU, 58-36. Sophomore Chuma Azinge had 19 points.
Scores from the San Dimas tournament: Kaiser 60 Upland 48; Rowland 64 West Covina 47; Bell Gardens 62 Arcadia 56; Alta Loma 51 South Hills 48.
