Boys’ basketball: Taft edges El Camino Real in Beverly Hills semifinal

Taft and El Camino Real met in the semifinals of the Beverly Hills tournament on Friday night, and the two West Valley League rivals produced a game full of drama.

In the end, a tip-in by Abdurrahman Zaid gave Taft a 47-45 victory. Zaid finished with 17 points. Brandon Russell had 21 points for El Camino Real. Taft will play Washington in Saturday’s final. Washington upset unbeaten Orange Lutheran, 61-58, on a last-second three by Matthew Mondesir, who finished with 25 points. He used to play for Bishop Montgomery. Joseph Riley, KaVaughn Scott and Chris Williams each had 13 points for Orange Lutheran.

In a consolation game, Devante Doutrive scored 30 or more points for the fifth consecutive game, finishing with 31 points, in Birmingham’s 60-57 win over Crossroads. Loyola defeated Beverly Hills, 47-42. Josh Lavergne had 13 points. Brentwood defeated Mission Prep, 58-49. Dylan Horn made six three-pointers and finished with 18 points.

In a matchup of top 25 teams, Redondo defeated La Mirada, 89-74. Leland Green and Ryse Williams each had 17 points.

Heritage Christian defeated Chaminade, 58-52, in the championship game of the Heritage Christian tournament.

Tesoro handed Village Christian its first defeat, 60-56. Isaac Etter led Village Christian with 20 points.

Lawndale is in the championship game of the El Rancho tournament after a 67-66 win over Temple City. Santwan Harris had 15 points and Eric Willis 15.

In a semifinal game of the Corona del Mar tournament, Mater Dei defeated Corona del Mar, 73-39. Spencer Freedman had 13 points.

Sierra Canyon advanced to the final of its own tournament with a 70-44 win over La Canada. Ira Lee finished with 24 points. Alemany also won its semifinal, 72-54, over Oak Park. Shacquille Dawkins had 25 points and DJ McDonald 18. Riley Battin led Oak Park with 17.

In a consolation game, Westlake defeated Granada Hills, 64-56. Adam Hess had 17 points and 16 rebounds. Ryan Murphy scored 20 points and Jack Roggin 15 in Calabasas’ 73-59 win over Chatsworth.

Wolfgang Novogratz had 28 points in Harvard-Westlake’s 66-60 overtime win over Mira Costa. Cassius Stanley did not play because of illness.

In the University tournament, University won the championship with an 83-73 win over Bernstein. Tournament MVP Jude Agbasi scored 29 points. Joel Towers had 22 points for Bernstein. Los Angeles defeated New Designs, 54-26. View Park defeated Buckley, 55-41.

La Salle defeated Santa Monica, 59-57, on a basket by Christian Little, who finished with 21 points.

Brandon Averitt had 17 points as Tarbut VTorah defeated Calvary Chapel, 44-42.

Lincoln improved to 6-0 with a 49-30 win over Torres. Jamal Cole had 16 points.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Manual Arts, 75-44. Joe Hace scored 17 points and Josh Love 10.

San Marino defeated Pasadena Marshall, 71-25. Sophomore Chuma Azinge finished with 21 points.

Joel Finney scored 40 points to help Central City defeated Animo South Los Angeles, 53-50.

Dominguez defeated Palisades, 72-64.

In Texas, Dorsey defeated Eastwood, 74-71. Deryck Harvey had 27 points.

Camarillo defeated Moorpark, 59-50, in the Ventura tournament semifinals. Christian Juzang had 25 points in Viewpoint’s 64-50 semifinal win over Oxnard.

Rancho Mirage (7-0) received 31 points from Charles Neal in an 82-62 win over Xavier Prep. Rancho Mirage will meet Palm Desert on Saturday in a championship game.

Highland defeated Lancaster, 61-42. Deshay Gipson had 22 points and Michael Brandon 14.

Austin Galuppo scored 20 points in West Ranch’s 71-53 win over St. Francis. Brett Gangi had 24 points for St. Francis.
