Boys’ basketball: Alemany upsets Moreau Catholic

Hayward Moreau Catholic began the season by knocking off Sierra Canyon, but another San Fernando Valley team, Alemany, got a little revenge for the Traiblazers.

Shacquille Dawkins and DJ McDonald each scored 17 points on Saturday to lead Alemany past Moreau Catholic, 63-60, in a first-round game of the MaxPreps tournament at Rancho Mirage. Earnie Sears added 13 points.

No. 1-ranked Chino Hills (10-0) defeated Seattle Prep, 97-58. Lonzo Ball had 25 points.

Santa Margarita lost to Rufus, 52-47. Jordan Guest had 15 points for the Eagles. Redondo defeated Folsom, 77-59. Ryse Williams scored 25 points.

In other MaxPreps tournament games, Christian Juzang had 29 points in Viewpoint’s 82-59 win over La Quinta. St. John Bosco (10-1) defeated Nipomo, 74-51. JJ Watson had 23 points and Makani Whiteside 18. Harvard-Westlake defeated Los Osos, 67-37. Ali Iken had 20 points and Cassius Stanley 19.

Damien defeated North Hollywood, 79-29. Isaiah White had 29 points and Bryce Peters 16. Santa Monica defeated Palo Verde, 75-45. Simi Valley defeated Arizona Rincon, 68-60. Kaden Young scored 26 points.

In the D1 tournament, Austin Galuppo scored 28 points in West Ranch’s 61-60 win over Inglewood. Loyola defeated Highland, 65-61. Henry Welsh finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Calabasas knocked off La Canada, 47-42. Kevin Seyedan made a decisive three-pointer with 51 seconds left for a six-point lead. Bishop Montgomery defeated Trinity Classical, 80-25.

Cathedral defeated St. Francis, 71-65. Dorsey defeated Dominguez, 81-68. Maranatha defeated San Marcos, 62-47. Trevor Stanback had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Smalley added 10 points and eight assists. Crescenta Valley defeat SOCES, 73-45.

In the Chaminade tournament, Aidan Dolan scored 26 points and tied the school record with eight threes in the Eagles’ 77-37 win over Granada Hills Kennedy. Taft defeated Lancaster, 74-50, behind Brandon Thomas, who had 25 points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals. Moorpark defeated Moorpark, 55-54. Menlo defeated Reseda, 46-21. Village Christian defeated L.A. Marshall, 66-61. Isaac Etter scored 28 points.

In the Under Armour tournament in San Diego, Gahr defeated Oak Park, 59-52. Marvin Bragg scored 23 points for Gahr. Riley Battin had 28 points for Oak Park. Fairfax defeated Washington Issaquah, 54-30 Antoine Monroe scored 14 points and Babacar Thiombane added 13 points. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame lost to San Diego San Marcos, 69-67. Chibueze Jacobs had 27 points.

In the Orange Holiday tournament, Tesoro defeated Crenshaw, 52-40. Isaiah Mahmud had 19 points for Tesoro. Ian Carter scored 30 points in La Mirada’s 65-62 win over Valley Christian. Ayala defeated Miramonte, 75-62. Austin Awosika scored 27 points.

In the Hart tournament, Cleveland defeated Bakersfield Golden Valely, 100-63. Michael Wade had 22 points.

In Chicago, Crespi defeated Perspectives, 68-42. De’Anthony Melton scored 19 points and Brandon Williams 13.
