Boys’ basketball: Fairfax is 14-0 after 59-55 win over Cathedral

What a start to the high school basketball season for the Fairfax Lions, who improved to 14-0 on Saturday in defeating Cathedral, 59-55, in a championshp game of the Huntington Park tournament.

It’s one of Faifax’s best starts since 1987, when the Lions went unbeaten during the regular season en route to winning the City Section title. Donald Gipson scored 20 points, Lorne Currie had 12 points and Lindsey Drew added nine rebounds and eight assists. Milan Acquaah had 23 points for Cathedral (12-2).

Chatsworth won the Silver Division with a 72-67 win over Birmngham. Mikey Farmer scored 23 points.

In the Serra tournament, Chaminade defeated Gardena Serra, 75-58. Michael Oguine had 22 points and Jordan Ogundiran had 18. Sheldon defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 48-46. Lawndale defeated Gahr, 76-71. Chino Hills defeated Renaissance, 97-88. LiAngelo Ball had 35 points and Lonzo Ball added 28 points. Marquise Mosley scored 30 points for Renaissance.

In the Sierra Canyon tournament, Aaron Holiday had 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Campbell Hall’s 68-65 win over Hart. Gabriel Bell-Williams added 15 points. No. 1 Sierra Canyon defeated Beverly Hills, 79-51. Cody Riley had 20 points and Remy Martin 14.

In a top girls’ game at the Sierra Canyon tournament, Valerie Higgins made a shot at the buzzer to give Chaminade a 59-57 win over Sierra Canyon.

Village Chriistian defeated Oaks Christian, 66-59. Bennie Boatwright had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Village Christian opens league play on Tuesday at Maranatha.

Palisades was beaten by Chula Vista Mater Dei, 48-46. Joseph Robinson scored 29 points. Taft lost to San Diego Parker, 61-60. Price gave Coach Michael Lynch his 500th coaching victory in a 69-67 win over La Costa Canyon. Roderick Williams scored 22 points. Price won despite the absence of James Washington, who was nursing an ankle injury.

In a Tri-Valley League opener, St. Bonaventure defeated Santa Clara, 56-42. Nate Weik had 11 points.

Santa Barbara defeated Righetti, 69-59. Bolden Brace had 25 points.

El Camino Real defeated Buckley, 52-51, with Brandon Russell coming through with the winning basket.
