Boys’ basketball: Jonah Mathews scores 30 points in Santa Monica victory

2016 began for Jonah Mathews on Saturday the same way 2015 ended _ with him scoring lots of points in leading Santa Monica to victory.

He scored 30 points in Santa Monica’s 61-47 win over Maranatha. Rip Economou added 14 points.

Another hot team is Eastvale Roosevelt, which received 30 points from Cal commit Jemarl Baker in a 62-57 win over Compton.

Bishop Montgomery improved to 14-0 with a 73-51 win over Corona Centennial. Jordan Schakel scored 25 and Ethan Thompson 21.

Beverly Hills defeated Loyola, 49-44. Cathedral defeated Long Beach Poly, 63-53.

Chad Donahue scored 27 points in Hart’s 60-58 win over Calabasas.

Sophomore Elijah McCullough scored 35 points, including 10 three-pointers, in Damien’s 85-44 win over Sunnyside.

Evan Battey made a layup at the buzzer to give Villa Park a 63-62 win over Rancho Cucamonga.

Jacob Davison scored 19 points in Cantwell-Sacred Heart’s 65-55 win over Alemany.

Redond defeated Santa Margarita, 72-65.

West Ranch defeated Renaissance, 69-57.

Cassius Stanley scored 25 points in Harvard-Westlake’s 80-65 win over Oaks Christian.

Sophomore Riley Battin of Oak Park scored 26 points, grabbed 24 rebounds and made all 16 of his free-throw attempts in a 66-57 win over El Camino Real.
